Rode to work last night. Got to work @ 2130 had heavy rain over night and didn’t have my cover. Finished @ 0800 this morning and about a mile away from work (when the bike had warmed up) my exhaust becomes really loud almost like a boy racer car exhaust. I suppose like a loud crackling and then rattling when throttle is released.

Could this be because of the rain? Will it pass?

Thanks

Awww nawwww.....

ER6 had a massive problem with exhaust down pipe breaking off the muffler.
It's under the engine.
The repair was to fit a complete system. Warranty.

I guess it would be repairable if the zost was removed. Not possible to fix in Situ. Very restricted access.

Can't remember what the root cause was. Normally exhaust systems break due to poor support.
After years corrosion and fatigue will get them too.
Fatigue from exhaust gas pulses, hot cold cycles and chemical attack from gasses and outside environmental..

How much do you reckon this will cost?

My 2010 ER-6n had exactly the same problem, The end of the downpipe had corroded and eventually snapped where it connects in the exhaust.

This happened to me just before I went off on a tour of northen europe, so i lashed it for a while with a steel can, gun gum and jubilee clips. I think this repair would have lasted a good long while TBH.

There was nothing wrong with the muffler itself, i just had to get the broken off bit of downpipe out of it.
A new set of stainless downpipes cost me £150 delivered from Delkevic, I put new exhaust studs in at the same time, but the total cost to me was about £160 total.

DIY :

2 exhaust manifold gaskets. £6

Welding repair. £50

It's much easier to remove the parts, weld and install.

There is hardly any access to the top side of the joint.

The only tricky part is ensuring the broken parts are aligned correctly so it all fits back on with no strain on the parts. A few mm here or there is acceptable.

New zost isn't much less than £500.

That was what dealer price was in 2009 for an 06 plate ER6F.

The beast was out of warranty but the dealer got us the system and only charged labour £100.

You could ask the dealer, they may help. May not.

Very helpful mate. Mine has snapped away also after inspection. I have ordered a Holts Gun Gum kit for £15. Hopefully seal it up. At least until pay day.

I am quite a fan of the stock exhaust noise on the ER6N so not in a rush to go out and spend on a new one.
