If your budget is ridiculously tight like you said then why do you want to buy a new bike for £1500 instead of finding a nice Jap bike for £800? Bit of a backwards way to look at it.

For me the main reason not to buy a new chinese bike is that in 3 years it will be worth £400 while something like a YBR will still fetch £800. Thats a lot of money to lose just so you can say you owned a new bike. I'd also wonder if you would want a bigger bike fairly quickly and then your stuck with a new bike that nobody will buy anywhere near what you paid.

If your worried about buying a lemon then find someone who knows about bikes and mechanics and take them along with you - might even be someone here that would do it.

This is all true.

While the quality level of Chinese bikes gets better year on year also consider the numpties at the dealership getting them out of the crate. Plenty of tales of poor workmanship in this country let alone in Guangdong!

Consider though: the warranty is the last ditch safety net - things have to go very wrong to ever need it - and warranty repairs might not cost you money but there's still the hassle.

<addendum> There is of course the alternative to new or old... almost new! Something a year old has probably had all the serious kinks ironed out and yet (check the mileage!) not had a chance to be completely thrashed.

This is true, in the last few months, I've picked up a 2nd hand 125 for me, that was 12 months old, with 40 miles on the clock, and, a 3 month old 125 for the nipper, with only 25km on the clock, both for appreciably less than the new cost. Howver, they are more the exception than the norm. Either way, i would still be wary about buying a 2nd and 125, don't buy unless you are sure, and have seen the bike/scooter.

Just got a scruffy Suzuki EN 125 with 20k miles and is a 2005 model.
Got it for £450 and has a years mot.

Will check it properly later but should last the year. Think I'll just stick to 30/40mph roads though which is all I need to be fair.

The rear tyre is tubed.
I don't know to be honest it's a EN 125 so it's an import I think.

The MOT history is a bit odd as well but idk it is cheap. Haha.

What's the best material to use to replace missing odometer glass?
Was thinking plexiglass but ideally need something easy to cut to shape.

Acrylic.

These people will even cut it to size for you and they aren't expensive.

Agree.
Taking good measurements and buying a piece of laser cut acrylic
is a lot less arseache and will give better results than doing it yourself with a jigsaw

If you're lucky and want a circular piece this lot may help

My take on this , all be it late to the party as usual.......go for one of the big four brands.
At the moment I cannot believe how cheap second hand Hondas are of say 5 to eight years old. The choice out there is huge, find your self a bike that fits the budget with a bit left over to do any minor maintenance bits.....surly you can’t go with a CB range of 250/450 .

As for Chinese bikes, some are good , some are not, but remember “Cheap is not cheap”!

Fun begins now with buying such a cheap bike.😄

What could cause loss of power at about 8k revs
I don't actually lose power but the RPM build up kinda flatlines. Like it is being choked.

I'm thinking air filter. Had a look at it and it has a tear in it and is a bit green when it should be black.
Ordered a new one just wondering what else it could be.

Idles fine and has a new carb.
Exhaust is a bit manky . Particularly at the manifold hoping no exhaust gases are escaping as that will no doubt need drilling out.

Spark plug looks new. Oil dunno when it last got changed so will have to do that and order a oil filter.

Chain isn't great suspect it will need a new one but I can't see that being the issue.

Could the carb as it's new?

Could well be. Whip it out and check teh jet sizes needle position and float height. Adjust accordingly BTW what the redline on that bike?

I'd buy anything in good condition that I thought would do the job well. It would be used if possible and something that ain't really pretty but a solid rider. I wouldn't seek out any particular capacity, but I'd agree that for a hack you don't need or want more bike/power than is required or at least not massively overkill.

The above bike would be my well maintained daily commuter and if it was solid, safe and reliable I wouldn't give a shit or thought about it after that point. I can't get excited about any A-B vehicle, so I wouldn't really worry about what I'm riding if it did the job well.

How about as an idea, yiu try a cheap dirty used jap and if you like it but want something newer then you can always get your spanking new Chinese 125 or whatever as a future upgrade?

Too late I already got my self a dirt cheap Suzuki en125 for £450 with a years mot (Dodgy I suspect)
£20 to tax and £115 to insure for the year with legal cover though. Razz
Apart from the Speedo not working and the noise it makes and the lack of power it's fine haha.
I should really take a few pictures just to show what a truly awful piece of crap I have got.
But that being said it does start and stop. Which is all I need.

Will do a few jobs on it the weekend.

Stuck a new air filter in it and its riding significantly better. (First thing to arrive in the post from Fleabay)

Hard to gauge if it's actually a power issue though due to the lack of a working speedo.
Once I get the speedo working I'll know. I suspect it's because these bikes are pretty slow acceleration wise past 40mph,

That being said I still think there is a issue with the carbs as its very noisy (I suspect the noise is coming from the carbs)
Idk least I will be busy the weekend. Laughing
Considering how bad the air filter was it could also just be manky old oil and an old oil filter.

It's getting me to work and back though so I am happy.

Probably also doesnt help that I have not rode a 125 in over 5 years. So a power issue could just be nothing other then me not being used to a slow bike. Laughing
It's a fun little bike though; Probably enjoying this bike more then my 600RR.

As you wish but she is not for sale. Razz Razz

Dunno if you can tell because its blurry but my fuel line is see-through.
I know they are black standard but didn't think nothing of it. Flicked through the manual just now and discovered that with this model the fuel filter is not inside the tank but supposed to on the outside on the fuel line.
So someone has obviously thrown the fuel filter away. So blocked jets are probably causing the power issue.

Also pretty sure it's been knicked at least once due to the state of the wiring and the new ignition barrel. Laughing
Also looks like it's spent most of it's life on the pavement.
Despite the state of the electrics the only thing that doesn't work is the fuel gauge.

Needs a new inlet manifold so that was probably causing the lack of power. Had a tear.

Ah well gotta wait a week for that to arrive now.
