OK, so I'm sure this won't be an alien concept to many on here. I work in an office in a city centre; it's not air-conditioned so at this time of year, it tends to get rather warm (although the issue I'm posting about does actually occur throughout the year). Where I work I'm surrounded with colleagues who evidently feel the cold more than I do. I fortunately am sat next to an opening window, but when I open it I usually end up with remarks about how cold it is (even today!) and/or the window gets shut while I am away from my desk.

It's not like I'm sat here in a full suit; fortunately my workplace is relaxed enough for a smart shirt and trousers (no tie), yet I still find it very warm (shorts are not an option!). So I'm left with one of two choices seemingly; sit here stifling (and although I have a fan, I find it unpleasant to have air blowing at my eyes for long periods) or open a window and end up in a conflict with my colleagues.

Maybe it's my cold (pun not intended) logic, but it seems slightly ridiculous that my colleagues (who are wholly female in the immediate vicinity, not that it's entirely relevant) wear very light clothing, e.g. dresses, light sleeveless blouses etc. but then complain of the cold, where as a male worker I'm "required" to wear more formal attire . . .

How do others deal with this?

Don't get my started on how hot I get when I wear my kevlar jeans to work . . . although I guess I'm making a conscious choice there!

Is the company large enough to have an HR department? What do they say about the inequality of dress standards?

Shower less frequently. Wear a polyester shirt, make it do two days. Perspire openly. Sit back in your seat with your arms behind your head and complain about it being too hot and how sweaty you feel. Use the fan to waft the smell towards the window closers...

Umm. Linen shirts/trousers are cool and smart. You can also get merino wool dress shirts which are good at wicking/temperature regulation.

It is well known that men prefer slightly cooler temperatures to women regardless of clothing.

I would open the window and explain that it is far easier for them to put more clothes on than you to take more clothes off.

You should try working in an open-plan office as I once did, with one Muslim, who decided that at Ramadan when he's fasting, during a baking hot spell the aircon dehydrated him out because he couldn't drink anything - so just turned it off. Every other (non-Muslim) worker just looked at each other...

I tried that once, you'd have thought I'd suggested women be refused the right to vote. Oddly when once I did suggest women should not have the vote there wasn't anywhere near the same level of outrage.

What temperatures is the office reaching? There are no H&S regulations with regards workplace temperatures as such but they do provide some guidance.

https://www.gov.uk/workplace-temperatures

Best I can see for you in that lot is the need for fresh air?

Sounds all too familiar, we have air con however the self appointed female office manager* turns it off at about 9am.

This includes when we have heat waves, there are no windows that open and as such by the end of the day it feels like the oxygen supply has been used up.

Likewise I'm not keen on using a fan, the noise is annoying.

I am now a lone male in a room of 11 females**, I just escape to lots of meetings.

*this is now the manager, she is in charge of some of the staff but is the same scale as most of us, it just happens the air con panel is near her desk and as such she has control.

**at best 1-2 would be worth a drunken fumble.

I suggest have a feinting attack and smack your head off a desk, get carted off to hospital then claim head injury and threaten a court action. Oh, and email HR to raise the issue so you have evidence when tjey ignore it.

There's only the slight risk of fucking up and causing yourself some serious drain bamage. Laughing

Faking it would be tricky as with cognitive tests they'll be expecting the results to be consistent.

I work outdoors, rain, wind, full sun, freezing cold.....adjust with layers. My commiserations to you for working with fellow humans with varying thresholds of chill factors. Cannot be enjoyable.
I’d fling the window open and jam it.

We have a lad in our office who wears a hat, coat and hoodie all day, every day, and is still complaining when we try to crank up the air-con.

Weird.

Also work in an office that has no air-con and is largely glass.
During the winter its freezing and in the summer, think it was 38c the other week. I hate anything over 30c, but 27c is about my limit before start making mistakes.

I work in an office of woman, who also find anything below 25c cold.

Simply put. Fuck em. I have window open, fan on. They can put clothes on, I can't take any more off without getting fired.

The usual stuff. Can you work elsewhere, work from home, get in early and leave early. Take your shoes off when sat at desk. Wear cotton. Soak a flannel and put it on feet (not always possible, electrics etc)

I wouldn't go opening any windows in the Shard. Might not end too well.

Get yourself off to the charity shops and buy them all the most hideous jumpers possible (Christmas themed if you can find them).
