The bike is a 2001 Honda hornet 600

Right so this has happened twice now, riding along and all fine, come to a stop and the engine cuts and and won’t restart as the batteries dead.

So I’ve gone through the following checks

12.48v Everything off checked at battery
12.50v everything off but headlights on

12.32v ignition switch on but engine not running
11.7v ignition switch on, engine. It running, lights on

12.64v ignition on idle 1k
12.87v idle 5k

11.78v engine on idle, lights on
11.81v engine on 5k revs, lights on

Stator idle across all three
11.4 initially
At one point the engine cut out and it then dropped to around 3 when tested in pairs.

The reason I checked with the lights is because both times the engine has cut out when riding was when the lights were on. The bike has twin dominator style lights.

Is this going to be the RR at fault or the Stator?
If a replacement RR is needed which one do I go for as I have read the genuine ones are prone to failing.
If the stator is that easy to replace myself?
Cheers guys

I used this video as a guide to test the stator

The stator is doing nowt providing you set the multi-meter to A/C .

Yes... something like 30VAC on the stator side and >14VDC on the regulated side if you want the battery to actually charge.

You can take a horse to water but you cannot make it drink it.

Mmm, to be absolutely sure: you're getting 11.4VAC from the stator side?

To put it plainly (as seems needed) if you want to get say 15 volts of DC you need more than 15 volts of AC... let's just say it's not a perfect conversion inside the regulator before we all start pointing a graphs of sine waves Wink

Try testing the AC side again: at idle, with a bit of revs and then a bit more revs? Is the AC voltage going up with the revs?

If in doubt unplug the connector block and test again.

So I unplugged the stator from the RR as the connecting block in the start cables has been removed and the wires soldered together.
So set to AC and on idle the readings I got between each of the yellows wires was 11v same across all three. On revved to 5k and I got 53v across all three.

Sound about right?

I have ordered a replacement RR as it looks to be the original and therefore doesn’t have the fins to assist with cooling.

Good and good.

Honda tend to use the same colours across all their range of reg/recs so they are pretty much lego. Occasionally they sneak in 2 grteens or 2 reds, this is a red herring, connect all reds or all greens together.

Yes, those reg/recs with no heat sinking struggle. They are supposed to heat-sink to the frame but the frame gets hot anyway. That's why VFR750s were notorious for failures because the frame gets too hot to touch.
