so had my old battery ( original 2009 swapped earlier this year ) and had on trickle charge all day.

swapped it over, bike wouldnt start just the clicking. Measured voltage 9v. so expected.

went to 'new' battery, off bike, and says 12.5v. did as someone suggested and added a halagen and dab each end on a terminal. battery 0v

did the same test on the old battery. it lit the bulb, just about and dropped to 2.5v

conclusion. then new battery is a duffer. thanks all.

Staggered, 0V doesn't seem possible! You're really unlucky to find such a dud Sad Hope a new battery sorts it Thumbs Up

odd thing is it might not drop down to 0v if I didnt have a 55w halogen attached.

so for the bike to be able to start on the kickstart it must have had just enough juice to supply the fuel and running bulbs 2x3w

actually bought battery 11 feb 2019

be interesting if theres any warranty?

Oh yes, you'll always get a voltage drop of some sort and a battery at rest versus under load, yes... all fine but I wouldn't expect a drop like that! Serious internal battery fault. Probably only materialises at a certain current threshold Thinking

Wotcha.

Did you look at the volt drop HERE ?

I didn't think it was the battery at fault until I did that test.

Speaking of mitts, heated grips? These things are a proper PITA on smaller machines if they haven't been fitted properly or are cheap and nasty... Start there for an earth issue, any other non-standard electric gizmos?

these are oxford heated grips.

the battery drop/load test was done without it being on the bike.

my old battery can light a bulb but drops to about 3v from 9v

the new batt, also off the bike literally goes from 12.5v to 0v

neither are on the bike, so its not the bike.

That will be easily proved by taking it back to where you got it from, new batteries usuallly come with some fairly long warranties.
Amazon however does seem to be making a name for itself by selling sub par genuine goods.....
