Jesus wept. They put the smell into gas so you can tell if you have a leak. You smell gas, you have a leak.

There is no minimum leakage that is OK.

When doing gas system tests on boats we pressurise the system to 30mb, seal it and if it drops half a millibar in 10 minutes it has failed. To give you an idea of how little that volume of gas is, ambient temperature changes during the test can result in a fail.

Not long home.

Gas man came out said the leak "did not pose a risk" due to the absence of a spark and that amount of gas that was escaping was very little to negligible. He said it was an older meter from the late 80s proceeded to mess about with it for 20 minutes.

I can't smell anything anymore so hopefully that's the problem solved. So make of that what you will

What I'd make of it is that if it didn't pose a risk, then what was he doing for 20 minutes?

Good on you for calling.

Sounds like he was playing the leak down

Gas it's self has no smell the smell is added so you know when it leaks

Shocked Laughing Shocked Laughing

So it's a spark that would be the danger, not the gas leak?

Perhaps his manager could clarify that. Thumbs Up

Dearest Officer, I do indeed own ten grenades and a full auto machine gun.

Fear not, it poses no risk due to my lack of spark. Laughing

Without getting too melodramatic, I wouldn't want to have to trust the work of someone who says a small gas leak isn't a problem because there isn't a spark. Given how dangerous a small gas leak can be, asking to have all the work checked by someone who isn't a derp seems perfectly reasonable to me.

As said thousands of times before, there shall be no leak detectable by human nose. That is the reason why they put the odor to it. A slight leak might be present, but only a trained dog and specialized measuring devices should be able to detect that.

I would demand some better explenation, as, and once again it was said before, small leaks/cracks can turn into something bigger. My other concern would be the place you found the leak, your cupboard. Enclosed spaces filling up with higly volatile substances shouldn't be marked as alright. It really puzzels me, that a country where the ''Health & Safety'' policy dictaces how people may sit at a desk so they don't die at their workplace, yet an obvious gas leak is treated like something completely harmless. Confused

Also, and I do not question your regulations, but an 80's gas meter? Thinking

I hope you got his name. So if anything happens he can be brought to the dock and face time to contemplate his stupidity while bent over in the showers....

A small leak in a enclosed space will soon build up. once released (door opened will then be into a room where there is a spark hazzard Rolling Eyes

Guys , he's playing it down cos he deals with leaks every day..
Trust the bloke ding the work, he has obviously repaired the leak if the smell is no longer present.

His wording of it not posing a danger is just that, whilst the message is very clear to Joe public if u smell gas turn the fucker off and make the call there is a permissable amount in direct relation to the size of the meter it can effectively leak without ever causing a danger.. I would suspect this is what he is referring too.

The reason we don't go into more detail is because a little knowledge is dangerous with gas.. so yeah, if u smell gas turn it off make the call. If you still smell gas after or that dial keeps moving get a second opinion. But I'd trust the utilities board myself, those guys are knowledgeable blokes.

If you've got a problem with gas leaking then these are meant to be superior to traditional emergency pants.
