Been riding an old Puch Alpine converted to single speed to and from the pub for years now.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xh8O1NrZAp8KJ8PgOu-aHwzXiN3dotuZLaPJbZXE7hY8hB9McokbFu74YOXfQf1rd_d54Fnf1jRxFe9QsMTLwv1k2zjCuH4BgCIAH8HqR9CqMQIkDauGSNnIt2hOqCOSlspPQNp-Qg=w1163-h872-no

Last time I rode it home, I heard a strange clunking noise. It took me a long time looking at things to fiind out where it was coming from. Perhaps this is testament to how well constructed the rest of the frame is and why I didn't have a horrible crash!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/SRsUp201bHL5yQXyAcdUyiO3S5pcFP7glBlmS61TkIqTa4rMNtzNr_EuhQbPtC5vL3fgqFy1Tsyo7ys6EAKIl_XkiT8Xz9A8y5HffjKOyJGr6b5eQ29ggrvxvWHhcBAkKE76vh_NZA=w1163-h872-no

Right on a brazed lug so it would be a hell of a tricky fix and given I paid £25 for the bike originally, I think it's time for a change.

Cue ebay. Found this locally for buyer collects only (Why would you do this? It costs about £25 to courier a bike in a box, some hipster would have snapped it up). However, I won the auction for the princely sum of £26, inflation is a killer I tell you!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kHTFae8L6NLY2SbsZtozfPOG_y9CE3QNE8Sg2Nx50KyEI-YEhRaNF1w8T5zRQ9cWRMmZAGx6t52QEdiRJKITOw9tEOfzb6SJjeS-jrmArkyUFx8xndrk-V-FdxdB7cBM-lq-A4hA4Q=w1163-h872-no

So it's a 1984 Dawes Renown. British made from 531 steel tubing, dropouts are good for my single speed.

These CR "Super custom" cranks are actually really good. Unfortunately the bolt circle diameter is unique and no longer made so obtaining chainrings is a bit of a sod, not decided if I'll use this or just bung the sturmey-archer crankset off the puch on there.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/jS3SLg658mEhPMgCBK9dzMvGjw-LMjk-aftyCQ3F-QVagzZH7ebCqtfrv9bYLcXDCaYgl5t9NAjt00BwSrFMwL9O0-dhq_HQdocobXIoQVZ7NTEdR3Wn49PoeWVYe13XAk4QXl7RDw=w1163-h872-no

So light surface rust but it's a decent steel frame so it'll be fine under that.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DOfLcjduu5oEMKWLUbJdHViQxYiwEIec51_JbpHES_Kt9DjX_ukSHPl8zZq2srCg2JYUVKla4vnEfPCQVSaaEQhZjPbCfYN7PGIAAIreWmJPgea0AptH6n0aCJSyaxpgX1c6oWdl5g=w654-h872-no

Neat but understated lugwork.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/smVrK5OTGyINK8y0JGFnzs_1op-y1R08hrN16qwaHNrDH64IH22eQC8O4CXGHRQJXRbK1FVd61ScZmEElCuKCsj9jVWiL6c5LWhe8fwH1GCYHuB-6_wx5aVvYu0P2JWIJNQ1FxcdbA=w654-h872-no

Steel does not necessarily equal heavy.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Q_vSsA7-5_cFQhBOdMUO_8qAwtf7J3LAbLeqSNvU9qA0qWJf7CH0SQkEmbSFh0wZ6gFNGzGEFfxI6x3BbtgiRmwmIy2FAOr5T_PlbHuNIvNx6rFhgfg4qPvLI_boGnjFos3VkbtSaQ=w1163-h872-no

Now the pure win. Seatpost, stem and bottom bracket all came out at the first time of asking!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Njmp2GQ0OmNY1j4yPGIxLsVg1qeRGEy1mG6CDXFuZ0nmK57E6iKIx4mL8VxGe20jEEcyyirR-9C8H7BK9cDHyK9yD8qzyD8tzKbaF9MJnxqx-7aIHyNd0REWCtp-5dJ6FJRGRYh8Sg=w1163-h872-no

Only bit of actual damage I've found is a ding inthe main tube where the bottle cage was attached.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/hsljZE-T7N_iwL4SHcv_D_s7PKG3p-KOwPdL16lq0-wE2YzirWIOmaJp9DWAfhag1ZYllEc7YGvIgO-FMJ5GC3qss1QwfTc0aOiHWKuLIFp-OiPdMPEbISaPX9a0p7BDOH5Oo88QGA=w1163-h872-no

Threads are all fine, bearing cups are clean. I now have myself a project.

Got to decide now if I want to repaint it the same colour and get a replica stiicker-set or have it done bright yellow then pick out some of the lugwork in a different colour. I like yellow bikes.

I'm erring on the side of yellow. It's not rare or unusual enough to feel like I'm wrecking an historic bike.

Not actually checked if the 27" wheels I built for the Puch will fit yet but the chainstays look wide enough to take them. The wheels it came with are nothing special, I have a pile of worn, slightly rusty 700c wheels as it is so those will probably land up in the skip.

Reynolds 531 tubing was quite the thing back in the day.

How about a nod to the old Dawes racing team when the Milk Race was a thing?

Has the tube sheared? If not, why not just run some more braze in?

It's sheared through above the brazed joint. It would need to be slugged and welded. the welding would probably spring the other brazing. Then it would be a mess and I'd need to repaint it.

May as well start from scratch.

Bit of JB Weld, job's a good'un!

I did my fixie in gloss black with metal flake. From a distance it was all Henry Ford "any colour you like as long as it's black!" but there was a punch to it which you wouldn't figure out until close inspection.

I think the lugs on steelies are so much more elegant than the ugly welds on modern aluminium bikes.

For fucks sake!

Back to the drawing board. It's not a good enough frame to justify the expense of new dropouts, re-brazing and re-finishing.

This was almost invisible. Only just spotted it because the powdercoat cracked as I finally tightened down the track nuts after fitting the chain.

Just dropped £75 on a raleigh competition in 501 superlight. Doesn't need painting. Needs a headset so I'm hoping it's new enough to be 24tpi. The older 26tpi ones are raleigh specific are more of a pain to get hold of because all the chopper/BMX guys buy them up. Mind you, I know a guy.

Yay! New pub bike finished!

Front wheel was a pest, I couldn't get it trued but it turns out that's because the rim was made of cheese and the nipples were pulling through instead of tightening. New rim and all sorted.

It's a Raleigh competition in reynolds superlight tubing. Tenge headset. Miche front caliper. It took AGES to find silver bar tape!

Built the new front wheel onto an on-one track hub using radial spoking. Mainly because I've never done a radial wheel before.

Rear is my old coaster brake hub. Snowflake spokes because I can if I want to.

Does it float? It'll be no good as a pub bike for me if it doesn't.
