Been riding an old Puch Alpine converted to single speed to and from the pub for years now.

Last time I rode it home, I heard a strange clunking noise. It took me a long time looking at things to fiind out where it was coming from. Perhaps this is testament to how well constructed the rest of the frame is and why I didn't have a horrible crash!

Right on a brazed lug so it would be a hell of a tricky fix and given I paid £25 for the bike originally, I think it's time for a change.
Cue ebay. Found this locally for buyer collects only (Why would you do this? It costs about £25 to courier a bike in a box, some hipster would have snapped it up). However, I won the auction for the princely sum of £26, inflation is a killer I tell you!

So it's a 1984 Dawes Renown. British made from 531 steel tubing, dropouts are good for my single speed.
These CR "Super custom" cranks are actually really good. Unfortunately the bolt circle diameter is unique and no longer made so obtaining chainrings is a bit of a sod, not decided if I'll use this or just bung the sturmey-archer crankset off the puch on there.

So light surface rust but it's a decent steel frame so it'll be fine under that.

Neat but understated lugwork.

Steel does not necessarily equal heavy.

Now the pure win. Seatpost, stem and bottom bracket all came out at the first time of asking!

Only bit of actual damage I've found is a ding inthe main tube where the bottle cage was attached.

Threads are all fine, bearing cups are clean. I now have myself a project.
Got to decide now if I want to repaint it the same colour and get a replica stiicker-set or have it done bright yellow then pick out some of the lugwork in a different colour. I like yellow bikes.
I'm erring on the side of yellow. It's not rare or unusual enough to feel like I'm wrecking an historic bike.
Not actually checked if the 27" wheels I built for the Puch will fit yet but the chainstays look wide enough to take them. The wheels it came with are nothing special, I have a pile of worn, slightly rusty 700c wheels as it is so those will probably land up in the skip. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

Reynolds 531 tubing was quite the thing back in the day.
How about a nod to the old Dawes racing team when the Milk Race was a thing?
