If it's for occasional use a free VPN would be fine but if it's something you'll be using a lot...

Best one I've found so far is NordVPN. One account can run a few devices and, for a change, the Linux install wasn't too painful Smile

What do you want the VPN for?

VPN does not hide your illegal activities online (torrents).

Yes it does - the main issue with dodgy downloads is that your ISP is likely to detect them and take action. With a VPN your ISP can't see the traffic.

They're also useful for getting round regional restrictions.

I use AirVPN - it's a paid service, is very reliable, provides good connection speeds and has plenty of well distributed endpoints.

Which ISP is that meant to be? Just curious...

Some ISPs (Yes BT, I'm looking at you...) actively block access to sites they deem to be dodgy. They're often wrong too. Use of a VPN sticks two fingers up to that kind of nannying.

I have very specific uses for VPN technology, partly job related, partly to deal with the bothersome problems around CGNAT, partly because I can and I want to. Laughing

Plusnet.

All that happens is they send those emails.

Your ISP isn't interested or bothered that you're downloading films or whatever from torrents.

You don't need a VPN to access torrent sites or streaming site just because piratebay and the like are blocked. Use https://unblocked.nz/ instead.

Your data is being held by someone...somewhere.

Sadly I'm in court with a close friend in a week who despite using a VPN, is in serious trouble.

I don't bother anyway, wouldn't care about using a VPN, most of my torrents happen over 4G anyway.

Why not just add Anonymoux to your browser?
You can be anywhere in the world then . .

That depends entirely on how you use a VPN and applications - there are ways of maintaining absolute anonymity.

Sorry to hear about your friend, you do have to be careful about what your browser does even with a VPN. Some scripts/plugins can reveal a concealed source IP.

4G doesn't give you any degree of anonymity unless you take special measures...

HTTPS can be very secure as long as it's using TLS 1.2 and is end to end and not broken by an MiTM proxy or similar.

We use HTTPS for secure email - so does the Government and their agencies.

That's got nothing to do with using a VPN.

What someone should be using depends on what they're wanting to do as there is no one sit fits all solution. What to use depends entirely on what you're wanting to achieve. You can't give a helpful answer to the question of should they use a public VPN, a paid for VPN or no VPN at all without knowing what they're wanting to do.

Whether there's a suitable free VPN service that would be appropriate or whether a paid for VPN would be better depends on what you're wanting to do. It might be that a VPN is completely unnecessary or that VPN isn't the answer OP is looking for.

We need some type hint the OP about why they're thinking of using a VPN. Anonymoux and or HTTPS are not substitutes for a VPN. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

If someone needs a VPN to hide what they're doing from torrents then they must be downloading something pretty nasty. Sick

I know the difference between HTTPS and a VPN Wink I was just pointing out that HTTPS using TLS 1.2 as an end to end encrypted connection is very secure.

VPNs aren't only used to hide nasty downloads either - they're a useful security tool. Laughing

4G with carrier grade NAT sharing a single public IP to at least 8000 clients, there would be very little to identify a cleverly rooted phone which doesn't give out any hardware specifics, they'll see my SIM sure.. but oh well, don't give unlimited data if you don't want it fucked.

I do this for a living, I specifically deal with networking and web filtering, the bypassing, use of, monitoring etc.. I'm also pretty good at it. Wink

Same as HTTPS, I was insinuating it will only give a shit about that in a browser extension. Second external program goes connect plz, it'll fail. I've had programs try to go out using my public IP before, jdownloader2 is the worst culprit in my instance. Even with a full VPN solution it retained its original known IP which prevented me from using zippyshare. I pushed it through a local proxy to fuck it up and use the browsers IP. That was useful. Wouldn't do that to everything.

That's going off on a tangent though, basically I wouldn't bother with a VPN.

HTTPS for emails... As in egress type?
For the most part, SMTP between MTAs is just as secure, sure it's not signed but the MTA transactions should talk using TLS 1.2 anyway...presuming you are using port 587 and not some old shitty 25 piece of turnip.

No one can be truly anonymous. You have to initiate a connection somewhere.

OP shouldn't bother a public VPN if you're doing anything that's of even the slightest importance.

On the subject of VPNs, I saw this headline a few days ago and immediately knew lol that's going to be shadowcrew bust which has been quite notorious for 15 years.

Very much that.

No matter how many steps someone takes to protect their privacy and stop their ISP from seeing the vast quantities of dirty nobcat porn they download each and every day, one of those steps will always be the weakest link and that's on top of the fact that humans are fallible. Make one little mistake or one stupid decision and everything then goes wrong for you and your shadowcrew. Laughing Laughing

Well there's the IEMI and IMSI of course, but CGNAT does obscure end IP addresses - it's one of the reasons that I use an VPN for some things

So do I and so am I - I'm an InfoSec Wink

The thing about HTTPS is that you have to be assured that the certificate that the browser is responding to is the actual endpoint certificate. Proxies that break the connection by issuing their own cert (MiTM) are fairly common - in order that traffic can be inspected of course. It's a feature on our proxy although we're not using it.

It depends on your needs - you obviously don't need one Smile

Egress stuff is good but it's horribly expensive!

We have our system set up in alignment with the secure email blueprint using TLS, DKIM, SPF and DMARC with mandated TLS 1.2 for the domains we want to assure. It works really well.

Paddy. wrote:

Ah there's the tale... If you can be assured of your initial connection then you're good to go. It can be done but it needs an anal degree of attention to detail and an effectively hobbled browser. Laughing

Here in china china china I'm using Astrill VPN.

This week was China's 70th anniversary so internet censorship went into overdrive. Almost everyone I know lost connection with their VPNs. Astrill however was fine throughout.

It's a paid service though. I don't think a free VPN service is ever going to be any good.
