I'm in the market for a commuter + off-roader. I'd like to do a fair bit of off-roading/green-laning but I'll be commuting multiple times a week.

Looking at a wr250f from 2005 with 6k miles and road legal kit for £2k. Need some advice whether or not the engine is likely to get ruined under 10k miles due to the off-road nature of the engine instead of being a dual sport. And of course I'm wondering if £2k is a decent deal or not, although if the bike isn't likely to last then I won't pay that anyway.

Cheers

£2k gets a WR250F like this on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-WR250-2005-/264489571593?nma=true&orig_cvip=true

It's got quite a few marks/scratches but I'm just wondering about the engine and how long it will last?

What is that brake pipe cable tied to? The last time I saw a pipe cable tied like that it stopped the pipe moving with the suspension correctly, resulting in a leak where it wore on the front wheel.

I'm curious as to whether or not the engine will survive much past 12k miles or so? I've heard that, unlike dual sports that can happily do 40k, these engines aren't too fond of doing higher mileage. Just how high (or low) is that, though?

Everything else I can deal with but it's a lot more £££ to fit a new engine!

I can't see mention of servicing. That's the very first thing I would be looking at.
Yes they're highly strung - suppose it doesn't implode and needs a rebuild next year. How much is a rebuild?

If it's well looked after then it'll be as good as new after doing 12k miles.

Find out from the seller what service history the bike has. Also ask for the registration number as then you can look at the MOT history.

No service history, at least not by a dealer.

Consider a CRF 250L it is more suitable for the two tasks.
Lots coming up used now ready to go with minor mods, nd cheaper than that.
With better tyres and downgeared by sprockets quite capable, I hammer mine all over the place round a farm and up the moor rounding up sheep etc.
Between doing that it's still kind of fun in a slow way on the road and in town.

I would like a CRF250 but I couldn't find one for under £2k. I'm probably going to leave the WRF and wait a few months to get a CRF for £2500-£3000 which was my original idea.

Yeah yeah yeah but there's still no mention of servicing.

So what's the consensus on the engine/bike then?

I'd actually like the extra power and lower weight, even if it's not quite as good on the road as the off-road nature makes up for it. If it's unlikely to cause me major grief (I strangely like maintenance) then I'd actually go for it. A CRF250 would be a good alternative and most probably safer one.

Consensus on the bike is it'll be fine assuming you're not going to be doing big mileage when commuting and that's more because it's not a fun bike to be commuting big miles on. Laughing

The engine will be fine subject to servicing, it's not a competition spec machine so the service intervals won't be stupid. Personally I'd say it's much the same as a CRF250 in terms of what it will need doing.

10-12 mile commute, 40-60 mins.

I thought the F version is made as an off-road bike, just it's been made road legal? Wouldn't that imply it's less durable as a dual sport but it's also not as crazy as the YZ? As you can tell I have no idea.

Thanks for your help though!

I was confused about which model it was and whether highly strung..

Remember though that those narrow seats hurt your backside at around 100 miles (if you ever consider doing more than the commute). If you're headed to green lanes further away it might be wise to trailer or take it in a van. Up to you though as some folk enjoy having a sore bottom.

Huh? You're going at 10 ~ 15mph?! May as well get a push bike!?! I do ~7 miles urban/suburban in less than 20 mins!

On my pushbike I do 9 urban miles in 30 minutes! Very Happy No red lights jumped either . . . much to the amazement/disbelief on here when I last mentioned this, but there's little difference in commute time between my bicycle (which can go down cycle lanes, bus lanes, through the bus/cycle only sections in the city centre and can filter through tiny gaps) and my motorcycle. The difference is gone completely when traffic is heavy.

That's the thing with push-bikes: you get to cheat the system Smile

However, even so, I'd guess that around here (far too many narrow roads meant for a single line of traffic in each direction that has two ultra-narrow lanes painted on it) about 60% of the queues I encounter on my motorbike are filterable, whereas about 95% of them are filterable on a push-bike. That does make a big difference!
