They are thick.

Add: They put it in the back of a van and took it back to Romania with them and as such have no interest in having a UK registration document.

Get that a lot with polish people buying farm machinery in our area.

If I bought a bike in Romania, I'd need to register it as an import anyway so why bother with unnecessary paperwork.

I wouldn't mention anything to the police. It's tantamount to confessing to permitting riding without insurance. Low hanging fruit. Would Dibble rather a) Chase up a mystery Elbonian tets rider or b) Give you a fixed penalty notice?

The only way I know to properly check the money (paper notes, anyway) is real, is to gentle make a small tear at the top/bottom across the metal strip, and check it is a real actual metal strip (it won't tear). The banks don't like you doing this as it then drastically shortens their life, but it is the best way to tell.

If bank check don't take them all in. They'll have 'em off you.

What about a Tesco self check-out? If no good it'll just spit it back.

I would be dubious about registering it to a ficticious address, that sounds a bit fraudulent to me. It could come back to haunt you, it's wilful something for sure.
Surely your mate could tell the Rozzers that he waved a bit of paper with 'Norwich Union' written on it, which looked legit ( you didn't see it you went for a piss) and off he went , never to be seen again. He must inform the DVLA and the police, because anything they do, lights, speeding, robberies, etc is all coming back to your mate at present. If he has a bit of form that is the last thing he needs. If it turns out to be a genuine misunderstanding it can all be sorted out in that case, but at the moment your mate is in a vunerable position. Luckily he has you as a witness.

We went into the bank, he half heartedly gave the teller the money. I went along to corroborate his story incase they were all duff and the rozzers were called. £780 handed over and all good, £20 was already given to the mini mart last night.

Lets just see what the weekend brings. Thanks again all.

Any concerns about allowing them to ride it uninsured could be easily explained: Just tell whoever that you let them ride around in a car park (where the agreed meeting took place) and off they went.

You still need insurance in a car park. Maybe you forgot you were on your own private land that has no public access and had given permission for them to ride there?

Yep he jumped on the back and they rode off into the night.

Except it's not a fairy tail, it's a genuine dilemma. It really happened, I know; 'cos I was there and witnessed it first hand.

I doubt if it was going to be used for a robbery or drive by shooting or some other crime.

If they wanted it for that they would hardly want to draw the attention of the fuzz if you reported it to the police straight away.

I would guess it's off to Romania.

This sort of thing was going on all the time with Polish buyers about 10 years ago. The Euro was high against the pound, Poland had joined the EU and people were having disposable income to buy bikes.
Secondhand bikes in Poland were uncommon and expensive, because having disposable income for toys was a new thing. So they bought them here, took them back to Poland, and sold them for twice as much.

Now Romania has got to the same level of economic development.

When I sold a bike to some Polish guys a decade ago they were only interested in having paperwork in case they got stopped at Dover with a van full of bikes.

I don't mean to dig up an old thread, but has your friend had any update from the police or anything like this?

I am expecting the bike to have appeared on crime watch Confused

Nothing. Nothing happened. The money was all OK. He phoned the DVLA and explained the situation, he was asked to write in explaining he was no longer the registered keeper, he did that, he has heard nothing back.

It'll just come back as a unregistered vehicle now to police computers etc.

As for what's happened, they've probably just bought it to ride around uninsured. A lot of chav's do it with old 600CC tanks, and use them for drug dealing etc around where I live. The police can't catch them, the ramming off stuff is nonsense, after the first officer got investigated police stopped ramming.
