And did anyone hear the one on Radio 4 where they gave teenagers a 2 hour slot at school every week to learn whatever the hell they wanted and they decided they wanted classes in Adult Life Skills? Not rock music, not gaming theory, not motorcycle maintainance or driving education. Not just at the one school either, the results were repeatable.

Yeah I do actually despise some of my generation, I finished school just this year and was given some bullshit 'diploma' that is meant to impress any future employers. I got it by working a part time job for a minimum of 3 weeks, attending adult life skills sessions and sitting through a mind numbing 2 hour lecture every 2 weeks. I don't remember much but it seemed anyone could be a lecturer as long as they turned up in tight trousers rolled to the ankle and had a knitted sweater.

Feminist dance therapy, shaving your arse crack and why our European history lessons are racist because they don't include enough black people where just a few of the lectures we had.

In the adult life skill lessons I quickly learned what people wouldn't survive outdoors for a day. Apparently some people didn't know how to boil an egg, let alone get a fire going. One of our teachers couldn't make an Ikea chair and let me take charge and teach how instead. We also got to practice making a shopping list and learned to sew buttons. Neutral

Aye, I can think of nothing that would suck more than attending Adult Life Skills classes. I most certainly wouldn't have chosen it. However, the point is these kids were given a choice of whatever lessons they wanted.

They did something similar at my school back in the early 90's. Thurdsay afternoons were "free" for 5th and 6th years. You could do supervised "study" in pretty much any of the departments. Most folks bummed about in the art department or played 5 a side football or did band practice. A few did something more practical/useful like a course on car maintainance with one of the techy teachers. I did an NVQ in photography (proper light and chemicals photography). NOBODY did Adult Life Skills! We'd have bullied the fuck out of them until they wised-up if they'd tried.

It could be argued both ways. Neither the younger nor the older generation seem to have figured it out. Human memory is unreliable, and human decision-making is often irrational.

Individuality isn't something that can be taught in an Adult Life Skills course. If you don't have a developed personality, you suffer. Anyone can learn to cook an omelette or program a washing machine from a 2-minute Youtube video. It won't help you if, say, you're in your 20s and it suddenly hits you that the world isn't your oyster after all. You could be stuck in a dead-end job and have no personality or interests, or you might have them, but have no idea where to start. Because you can't learn the guitar from a 2-minute Youtube video. You can't learn an interesting and impractical language from the community college. And you wouldn't know where to start, replacing a motorcycle tyre (and it would seem such a long way away, if you've always liked the idea of bikes but have never even ridden one let alone own one). So you go back to your computer games and find out they aren't enough to fill the void.

I have a theory that real Adult Life Skills are thought of as threats to productivity in some way, so you don't find them in schools or colleges. Yet you can find books on motorcycle maintenance in the gardening shop, around my way. Free classes in painting for the retired, etc. They (schools, government, etc.) don't care what you do once your vital energy and your best years are behind you. Fred Dibnah restored a steamroller at his home, in his spare time. There seems to be far less tolerance of individuality in these times. If they could stuff you (young people) into a cardboard box and still have you being productive, they would. And so much the better if you blame your parents/grandparents for all your ills, rather than overpopulation and social policy... They've even got pet names for them, e.g. boomers.
