Hi, I've got a 92 tdm 850 and I've got an oil leak from around the starter motor area and I have just fitted an original yamaha o ring oil seal but it's still leaking!!!!
Could it be the wrong grade engine oil or something silly like that?

I'll try again tomorrow and make as clean as possible and yes I did oil the o ring before putting it in I'm just getting frustrated with it now lol

No. It'll be badly fitted, most likely the mating surfaces weren't surgically clean or you haven't done up properly.

There is an outside chance of a cracked casing or warped mating surfaces but these are unlikely.

Did you lube the o-ring before putting it there?

Is it definitely coming past the o-ring seal and not from a crack somewhere? Check the part number on the starter motor, could be that it fits but isn't actually the right one and so doesn't seal properly.

Just an update on my oil leak... It turns out it wasn't the starter motor o ring but it was a knackered seal around the output shaft where the front sprocket is bolted on.

The obvious question is,,is it an actual leak or is it chain lube?

It was an actual leak I could see the oil leaking from around the shaft while the engine was running, I've changed the seal today and its fixed no more leaks
