Hey all,

I got a free ticket so am definitely going.
I just have a few questions to any regulars...

Is 1 day enough to check everything out? I have someone who might want to go but can't do this saturday, so I thought I could go twice!

I was looking to do the test drives and the adventure experience:
I see on the test drives some bikes have (A2), which is what I'm limited to, however there's other A2 bikes (like the Himalayan) which I wanted to drive on either the normal or Adventure experience, should I assume that's it's fine then? I think the Hima is the only A2 adv bike too but unsure.

Also, can you do multiple drives? Just a matter of queuing up?

Do you usually wear clothes under your gear and then leave it in the cloakroom? I see for the experiences we will be given gear to try on, so if I bring gear appropriate for staying in am I missing out on trying some nice stuff on? (eg. I usually wear leather trousers over chinos for work, but if I'm gonna stay in the gear I have some good fitting textile trousers comfortable as jeans.

I'm done in around 4-5 hours and then hitting a few pubs.

Everything is subjective and what you want to get out of it.

Edit - I travel by train so have never needed to get rid of bike gear but most garment sellers have a little cubicle set up to try stuff on.

Went for about 15 years and now truly board of it

You will easily be done in 4 hours.

I've only once been on the bike, Free parking, but it was at the end of November and 100 or so miles for me. It was -2C on the way back and I could feel my body shutting down, I couldn't go any quicker than 50 as the windchill was unbearable.

Last time was about 2 years ago and I bought a new lid, it was cheaper.

But factoring in 5 hours round trip in the car, £40 petrol, £12 parking (I think its 16 now) and £20 quid or so entrance, it's not a cheap day out. Food was ludicrously expensive also.

Back in the day, there used to be loads of talent at the show, even strippers one year. But its all lame now.

I was asked to go with a friend recently to the Cycling show and for the same reasons, I just couldn't justify it.

Went there after having last been five years ago, was good.

Saw some new stuff, the format was the same but the show they put on this time was much better than last time I went. Those guys doing the jumps and the flips and shit, insane. Balls the size of planets.

You will see everything by the end of one day so you only need to go once.

Definitely not an every year thing. I only go when there's an abundance of new bike models that I haven't yet seen in person.

Also took a bunch of stupid pictures sitting on bikes I'd never buy or ride because why not.

Waste of time and money, unless you like being shoved around in crowd's, or worse you like the majority of 2020 bikes. Most people my age would have a massively better day out at the CMM show at Stafford.

There's one or two specialist new bikes I would like to see close up, but they won't be at motorcycle live, and you can get a much better deal on current bike gear from on-line retailers in sales periods.

Unless you're desperate for a day out and to spend a fortune in a crowded pushy environment you'd be better having a day in the shed. Think of what you'd save by not going, and that's money you could spend on parts or upgrades to your bike instead.

I don't want to sound all miserable and anti show, but most of them are crap compared to 10-15years ago, and it's far better to go to a decent bike event, races, sprint, hill climb, etc and have a good day out at a more exciting event to show for your money than walk round a crowded pushy exhibition hall full of wankers all day.

The commercialism in these overtly commercial shows is something I find a bit offputting. Being treated like a walking wallet isn't nice, and people in general these days just come across as very entitled. I think people like me are screened out by default by such events. When riding, it's all about me - nobody else does or should figure into my private world. There is no TT champion, MotoGP hero, trustafarian adventure holidaymaker in that world. I can't go and worship or venerate people I don't know who don't care about me nor benefit my life in any way. Something in my very core rebels against being a follower. It's leader or loner for me - or death. I don't watch TV or support football teams. I don't follow anyone on social media. I wear armored FT leathers because they're good and comfortable - why update them? If I want a new helmet I'll go and buy one from a bike shop or a cheaper online source. Nobody will talk me into anything. Rather be reviled than fit into a pigeonhole. Anyway, yeah that's about it. Come see people who are better than you, I bet you can't ride in a cage spinning around in sequence, so know your place, admire, show deference and respect and maybe find your place in some insurance company's marketing dept's idea of the biker worls, etc. Hahaha no. I found my place a long time ago, and it's outside.

I lost interest in any of these kind of shows that time they sold the clothing & gear concession to a chap who then flooded all the stalls with very poor quality fake ATIKO gear.

If there's anything I particularly want to see I wait for the dealers to stock it.

Yes, the concession stands at trade shows run on expense-account pricing Sad

Luckily I work in Hospitality so all the trade shows I've ever exhibited at usually have some free samples to hoover up Smile One pub show it seemed like every other stand was exotic gins Wasted

Well I went to the international dirt bike show in Stafford in September, and that was a mistake too. The cost of getting there and admittance wasn't worth it or the day I lost walking round.

All the big European off road manufacturers except a tiny Gas Gas trials stand were absent and decided to give it a miss, despite some saying they would be there with big stands.

The classic off road show and auto jumble is the last show I'm probably going to attend, but seriously with the disappointment and being let down by most shows over the last few years, it'd be a much better use of your cash going to a race event, stunt show, drag championship, beach race or big trial or enduro event I reckon.

This resonates very much with me. I hate commercialism generally - they always spoil everything, turn it into a cliche. I've also been on the other side, working a stand - possibly the most boring day of my life. Bikes are about riding, and you are very much alone with it. It's a selfish thing to do, but if you love it, you love it. I do enjoy riding with mates once in a while (or did), but it's not necessary, and wasn't what drew me to bikes in the first place. It's one of those things I don't need anyone else to help enjoy.

And I'm with stevo too. Modern bikes aren't my thing, I just have to face it. Ugly things that just don't turn my head, no matter how many gimmicks and gizmos they build them with.

Having said all that, live and let live if it's your thing.

Managed 3 hours there and that was pushing it. Won't bother next year ... will go to Stoneleigh Kitcar show instead.

Bikes that are nudging car prices don't interest me and the number of pushy c*nty people at the bike show turns me right off.

I only go when i've got an itch for a new bike to see whether anything else is better - and it wasn't.

I think the day is what you make it.

I hate a twenty year old bike, I'm unlikely to own any of the bikes my backside polished and I replace fear rarely.

I did get to meet biketruck, I hung out with Kickstart and a few friends, and managed to buy nothing.

I had a pretty goood day, but I'd have been miserable going on my own.

I also got to catch up with the AVP team next door.

Stafford and Newark are kind of the same; hang with friends, drool over bikes I'll never own and try not to buy any tat, it's just the tat is rusty.

Well chaps I had a free ticket from a survey so it made it cheaper Laughing

I went with my mother this Sunday, we thoroughly enjoyed the show, tried some Gerbing and Dane gear, sat on many bikes which I have no dealership nearby and looked at even more, my mother sat on a ton of bikes, did the bmw ride xp and the free 20 minute motorcycle lesson which she enjoyed a lot, and now booked a CBT.

I took a packed lunch as I always do so £0 spent there Razz
I didn't buy any gear, although some promotions looked pretty good, but after seeing insurance princes I don't think I'll be changing bike anytime soon so I want to invest some in making mine better.

I do agree some areas are packed full and it's horrible, especially Ducati and har har ley, which was funnily full of guys in their 50s Rolling Eyes
Also, I think I'd rather ride a high RPM washing machine instead of the Livewire, because they make a similar sound but one has 2 less zeros.

All in all I enjoyed the day. Saturday was my "change the rear sprocket with minimal tools" day which took most of the afternoon, and I had 2 test rides in the morning, so exxxxcelent weekend.

I just realigning the wheel and taking the rear brakes apart as a clip fell off it and I couldn't find where it went on Sat and got fucking annoying putting the rear wheel back on Laughing

Ride on chaps Very Happy

We went on Sunday, quite enjoyed it, as the nipper and her friend came, was a little disappointed that Lexmoto weren't there, as they are looking at 125's. Didn't really matter much, as the nipper's friend still couldn't find anything she liked better than the Keeway Superlight. I have to admit, I am seriously tempted with a Benelli Imperiale 400, I've had a Bullet before, and other retro looking bikes, but there's just something about the Imperiale, it's certainly not the power !! The red version should be available around feb, only black available at the mo. I was a little surprised by the lack of electric bikes, apparently the majority are in the Czech republic for some electric bike show/expo there. Of the ones that were there, HD and Zero, the instant throttle response is something else, were the better ones, the worst by far was the Artisan electric stand, having bikes/scooters with poor performance, very poor range, and quite arrogant stand staff.

Also, I never felt pressured into buying something I didn't want, and to feign surprise at the cost of food if bought there, really, you know food at the NEC is not going to be cheap, or, even reasonable, if it concerns you that much, take your own. Or, get a passout, and pop in the Wetherspoons if you can't be arsed to take your own

I went on Sunday for the first time. It was OK, great for looking at all the latest bikes and jumping on every bike in sight without having a salesperson breathing down your neck, funny watching someone drop a brand new Africa Twin on the "adventure course" (in front of a crowd) you can try out bikes on, plus the stunts/show was pretty impressive, even if the compere was a pain in the behind (he wouldn't shut up!).

Didn't see any deals on anything, but I wasn't really looking either to be fair.

Would I go again? Not sure - one of my favourite pubs is just off the station at Wolves (and I never am usually in the area) so I got the train and called in - with that included it made the day worthwhile, without probably not.

If we out riding that way then we often call into CMC @ Clay Cross for a brew & a wander. Their special Sundays are getting VERY popular now yet they don't charge for parking, entry or oxygen, & the food & drink is the same moderate price as always.

This years Classic Jap Show, thank you boys n girls if you took yours to display. One mate fainted twice & another had to dissappear for a wank Smile

S'funny how almost every biker I know is fiercly loyal to the legend of 'Maurice' & CMC.

To be fair, never heard of Maurice, and only vaguely know of CMC as a bike store, the one in Cannock is quite nice, but they have a bit of a reputation for shoddy pdi's

Yes, Bathams is a nice pint, has a hint of toffee flavour. Holdens own beers are nice as well.
