Le Mans '66 7.5/10

More fun than I imagined it to be, based on a true story that I was peripherally aware of, Le Mans '66 (as I know it) is a very solid period/biopic/car movie. The chemistry between Bale and Damon is spot on, and the story is well told with great production design and a decent soundtrack. Bale's accent is a bit ropey at times, but I suspect a good 80% of the audience would hardly notice and the rest of his performance makes up for it, as you'd expect. Damon is excellent as Shelby.

Any criticism I can make against the movie would relate to the characterisation of much of the Ferrari team, and a couple of the Ford executives. The Ferrari lead driver, Ludovico Scarfiotti just needed a thin black moustache that he could twirl and the over the top nature of the image would have been complete. He has no lines, he seems to exist merely to look sinister. Josh Lucas does what he can with his role, but he plays the stereotypical toadying senior exec who does none of the work and takes all of the credit. That said, Jon Bernthal is great as Lee Iaccoca and Tracy Letts brings a believable Henry Ford II to life.

I sense that it could probably have been cut by 20 minutes or so and still told the same story but I never really felt it dragging or have any kind of lull. A thorougly enjoyable movie. If you like V8s, 60s Le Mans cars and slightly ropey Brummie accents, this movie is for you. Not quite as good as Rush though, sadly. Not far off though.

I watched the Netflix documentary on the Ferrari/Ford Le Mans battle (63 to 66) a couple of nights ago, which I'd recommend before watching the movie. Top watch. Smile

So they did mention 'the Brits' who had been developing the car prior to Shelby's team taking over, but didn't go into any of the story of how the car was developed from the Lola Mk6 in the UK before being handed over to the American team. Shame, but I can see why. The movie was 2.5 hrs as it is.

I personally think that Rush is a slightly better movie, but not by much.

Interesting as the trailer and marketing made this look like it was going to be a complete pile of American wank but sounds like it is worth a watch. Thumbs Up

Gemini Man 7/10

Will Smith back on form, fighting his younger self in this 90 minute flick. Fast paced, enjoyable, has Clive Owen in; which is worth an extra bonus point. Good thriller/action film.

Fantastic Beasts 2: Crimes of Grindelwald - 3/10

It's like watching Harry Potter on speed.

The story jumps from thing to thing, leaving you feeling like your brain must have completely jettisoned part of its short term memory because you absolutely cannot fathom how it moved from one part to the next.

One particularly succinct review on IMDB states:

Quote:
I literally just watched it, and I don't even remember what it's about.

Genuinely felt like the effects of speed. Surreal and unwatchable.

The Irishman - 6/10

Well made. Similar style to Goodfellas. Would give it a much higher score, but it was just painful to watch with all those old actors trying to appear young.

The film follows Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and probably a few other famous old names, as old men, being old men gangster types, trying to still be gangster types. Or something. Not too sure. I couldn't really follow it because at least 60% of the film is showing the build-up to their current story, wherein they attempted to make the actors look like their 40/50 year old selves, but failed terribly.

De Niro in particular was just embarrassing to watch. A man in his 70s trying to pull off a man in his 40s, it just didn't work. The face and 'de-ageing' make-up was okay (or was it CGI?). But his posture and his movements were all shuffled and hunched, like an old man, a very old man. It was a bit depressing and very distracting from the film itself.

The whole thing felt more like "the people who made Goodfellas trying to stay relevant". Scorsese should have used a new cast.

That being said, it is a move I will watch again. The story and filming style are high quality Scorsese. It's just the geriatric actors that brought it down for me, in a big way.

Knives Out - 8/10

Intricate whodunit film about a man who died, via suicide or murder, leaving a fortune for his family to squabble over.

It successfully had me thinking several of the characters could be the killer, before the classic big reveal by the detective right at the end. All fairly standard for this genre, but it was well made and a good watch.

Would possibly rate even higher, if it weren't for being mildly disappointed by Daniel Craig's attempt at sounding Texan. It was okay, but his English accent showed itself a couple of times.

Agree. The film was made 20 years too late.

Old men beating up young guys by prodding them.

That said, when DeNiro and Pacino shared the scene, they have a chemistry, something.

Would rather watch Scorceses other films. Cape Fear, Colour of Money, Casino, Departed, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Wolf of Wall Street.

Two for the Mrs:
1. The Kitchen. Wives of Irish gangsters ( in 1970s hells kitchen new york) take on their business interests whilst they're in jail. 6/10 plus extra point for Domhnall Gleeson managing to play a psychotic young veteran.

2. Florence Foster Jenkins. Hilarious turn by meryl streep as a society lady who simply cannot sing, but blagging her way to Carnegie Hall. Excellent support by one of the chaps from Big Bang Theory. Plus Hugh Grant being his usual posh twat self. Some pathos, so 7/10.

But...
I also watched First Man, about Neil Armstrong.
Despite that everyone knows how it ends, it managed to make me cry unexpectedly..
9/10 because I want to believe.

I think that's the issue with it. They said to themselves "Let's go all out to make this Oscar bait!" they forgot to make it entertaining, they forgot the fun aspects of an adventure on that scale and they forgot the awe parts too. They forgot the skill of Armstrong, his humour, his talent and quite a large proportion of his attitude. It's not fun, it's a historical mess and I expected so much more.

The Mandelorian 10/10

Not a film but absolutely top quality cinematography and a huge budget.

Set between the fall of the Empire (Star Wars) and the rise of the First Order it follows the fortunes of a Manadlorian bounty hunter a la Boba Fett.

6 Underground 7/10

Netflix movie directed by Michael Bay starring Ryan Reynolds.

Whats to say? Its Ryan being Ryan (deadpool, hitmans bodyguard etc) and Bay's explosive (literally) directing. Lots of car chases, lots of explosions and lots of funny moments. Great fun to watch

Just do not expect anything mentally challenging for 90 minutes.

Code 8 - 9.5/10. This was a GoFundMe operation, they originally did a short of a movie which was 10 minutes long.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqO90q0WZ0M

They then set up a funding project to make a feature length film. The main character in the short and feature length film is Robbie Amell and probably won't mean anything to anyone BUT his brother is Stephen Amell the guy that plays the character Arrow. Needless to say Stephen stars in the feature length film along with his less famous brother. Watch the 10 minute short, marvel at how awesome it is and then seek out the feature length version.

Worthy viewing.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker 4.5/10

There was a good script in there somewhere. My guess would be the previous draft was top quality, and then Disney added some studio notes based on fan feedback. It starts a bit like bad fanfic, and then sort of chunters along as a half decent star wars mov... *WALKBACK*. It has some genuine heartfelt character mome...*WALKBACK*. There are some epic space battle... *WALKBACK! I'M WALKING BACK RIAN JOHNSON'S STUFF!* HEY I'M THE ABRAMS DISNEY MONSTER AND I'M GREAT AT WALKING BACK STUFF YOU SAID YOU DIDN'T LIKE!*

I'm angry. I'm angry that internet neckbeards who didn't like TLJ because it did something different and interesting got their way. I'm angry that because of those people we've been denied a congruent trilogy. I'm angry because Disney and Abrams tried so desperately hard to show that they agreed with the fandom (Except Disney were the ones who released the last movie - go figure) that they turned what could have been a spectacular legendary movie of epic proportions, fit for the Star Wars name, into a mediocre movie that does entertain, with some emotional moments but is ultimately bland and forgettable.

I want to see the Gareth Edwards cut of Rogue One. I want to see the Lourde and Miller version of Solo. Above all, I want to see the version of Rise of Skywalker that was written before they added the studio notes pages to the script.

In this clip, homer is me during the film, and the pig is the film:

And today in this clip I'm Jimbo:

If you've seen one Star Wars film; you've seen them all. They are just kid rated films. It would be interesting if they ever did an 18 rated version. Limbs being hacked off, blood everywhere, swearing, sex, betrayal the works. Yes I'd pay to watch that. Otherwise it's just the same old fury teddy shit.

I feel the same way about Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and all that genre tbh.
Star Wars takes me back to my halcyon days, whatever film it is.

Yeah, I saw an interview with the actress playing the main female charactet (fsck knows who she is) she was coming out with all thus crap about how it was sidficukt for yoynf actresses to get these kind of roles, blahh blahhh (empowerment shite) blahhh. I thought wait a moment Carrie Fisher was great because she wasn't your usual popped out of a mold from central casting type and what do we get forty five years later? Some unremarkable, popped out of the mold at central casting lollipop. It put my right off going to see it.

I was gonna watch The Irishman but I clicked the wrong button and so now Maxie and I are watching The Two Popes.
It's got Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict (the German one).
I'm so out of touch with the church I didn't even know Ratzinger had retired.
I thought they all had to die in office.
Interesting.
Very good. If you like that kind of thing.

Plan is to watch The Irishman after the Queen's Speech Mr. Green Thumbs Up
