Most probably yes.

Arguably, its already millions of years old. Contaminated oil is a whole different kettle of chips....

What link did you watch?

The results only corroborated what was guessed.

It lubricated almost as well as modern oil even with no additive package but the limitations are that it might gel and not last as long.
But still OK to use.

The gist of my post is to calm the fears of those who are concerned about using that gallon of oil that's been sat in the shed for a few years. Yes. If 60+ year old oil works then a can of 2010 oil should be fine. (So long as it's stored been un-opened.)

The lubricity test on the machine was ok, but the lawnmower showed exactly why you wouldn't want to use it.

To quote the guy doing the test "This oil is still ok to use, but not for very long ..... this oil would sludge up an engine very quickly"

Aye... 'OK to use' is the part to focus on.

Of course it's not perfect as there is no additive package. Like I said.

Its probably a very rudimentary base oil.

And engines were not asked to do as much then (less HP) or run for as long between oil changes. 👍

It is a non-detergent engine oil, fairly typical of the period. It wasn’t completely devoid of additives as it had zinc and phosphorus, so probably ZDDP - which is why it did ok in the wear test.

High volatility and no detergents, plus poor cold temperature properties - aahm oot.

If the 60+ years old oil stayed in grade then a 'modern' oil will be OK if the container it's stored in remains intact (and the oil was in perfect condition when packed.)

I would not use antique style oil in my modern toys.

That's not really what I was suggesting.
The link asked if 70 year old oil was still good.

Bloody excellent mixed with a bit of unleaded, that is to say, excellent for painting the fence with. Should keep the nasty green mouldy organic muck at bay for a while.

I’ll admit I was impressed with the visual condition of it. However it was sealed in a metal tin and had very little in the way of potentially unstable additives in it. Modern oil is packed in plastic and is formulated with potent, chemically-active ingredients which can destabilise if interfered with (such as temperature swings, moisture ingress, UV etc).

Well looked-after oil should last years, but it is more susceptible to instability than such vintage oils.
