Hi,

I have just bought a bike ; I was not prepared for the actual loudness of the Highway Hawk Dragon pipes; they are embarrassingly loud.

So I looked into the possibility of making some kind of baffle and discovered the existence of DB killers.

Regardless of their effectiveness, my simple question is;

Is there any possibility at all of doing any damage to the engine by fitting them ? (I realise that performance may slightly suffer )

Also, the cheap eBay ones are solely metal, whereas the official ones have some kind of packing around them; can I add a small amount of damping material to make them more effective without choking every thing up ?

https://www.highwayhawk.com/detail/index/sArticle/1678

Also just out of curiosity, what is the biker etiquette with very loud exhausts on sub-1000cc bikes; are they seen as ridiculous ? I hope not.

Thanks

Theress loud, and there's 'obnoxious'
A kid in the street had a Lexmoto with a stubbuied after market can off gawd knows what 600+ bike. He's convinced it makes his bike sound like a Harley... nooooo no it doesn't.
His uncle turns up... on a Harley....(I try not to associate with that house hold too much, only they keep coming round and waving things like pit-bike petcocks at me and asking if I have anything off a Honda that will fit!) The bastardised Lexmoto sounds nothing LIKE his uncles Harley.. the Harley is loud, the Lexmoto is just obnoxious.... this may bear little on the noises they make... but it serves example!
Some-one round the corner has a genuine 1960's Lambretta.. air-cooled, piston ported all iron two-smoke.... with an expansion bottle exhaust.... this is loud... and quite possibly a bit obnoxious, but not as much as the lad who has a Peugeot Speedfighter with a spanie on it, that is very loud and very obnoxious; especially when he has taken 15 minutes to get from the bottom of our street, to the top, for the twentieth time that night!
To wit, the answer is not so much to do with either the sound the exhaust makes, or even how loud it is or isn't.... there's a chap round the corner with a VFR, that sounds like a bludy sewing machine and makes more transmission whine than it does exhaust noise.... it's the pitch, AN-D the loudness, but mostly who and when and how often citizenry if subjected to it!

Thank you Mike and Garth for your replies.

Its a 535 Virago.

I think that it sounds great but
I just cringe bit at the thought of warming it up
( I am maybe over sensitive though when imagining other people's perceived annoyance), and it is only for occasional leisure use.

But now, with the knowledge that no harm can be done, I will try the killers.

Thanks

This is a bit of; I used to get the VF out the garage, get it started, then dive back in the house to tog-up before going out on it. It sat idling for oooh, maybe three minutes, but old codger (Who am I kidding! Now I am the old codger!!!) next door took about the same time to get through the back garden gate to catch me as I came out the back door, and have a moan about it.... ANYWAY... the idea of 'warming up' is a bit iffy to start with. On choke, (or a modern EFI's enrichment circuit) the engine wont actually get all that warm anyway. The enrichment of choke will tend to bung in extra fuel, and keep the burn colder, and it wont properly start to get warm until the choke is 'off' and the engine put under a bit of load, and given some 'throttle' to actually get complete cylinder fulls of charge burning.

Its a bit like putting a big pot of potatoes on the hob, with the gas all the way down. Yup, there's a flame, but your spuds wont boil!!! And even if the water starts to get a bit warm, it will take forever until the pan boils, let alone boils dry!

The VF; note no 'R' had a pretty weak lubrication system; and 'warm up' was as much as anything a chance to get the fluids flowing, with no load on the bearings, as get everything up to temperature.
On a better. more modern machine, and especially something as low-tech as the Baby-Viagra... nah, get it out the shed, giove it as long to warm up as it takes to pull your gloves on, then give it the berries... it don't have an awful lot of them to start with... so just thrash the thing! THAT will get it warm!!!

Sitting on the drive at idle, WONT, and depending on where its left to idle... if like my old house, you have a house wall either side making a concrete canyon to contain and reverberate the noise... THAT gonna pizz people off.... especially old codgers next door...

On which topic... following the loud vs obnoxious comment; that chap regularly grumbled about the noise my VF made, through it's water-jacket... and then actually applauded the noise made by Unc's 1973 (Pre '77 regs do not demand any 'silencing' so ran an open pipe!) air-cooled 350 Ducati 'Single' Street-Scrambler.. 'cos it sounded like a 'Proppa' bike!!!! Err.. yeah! If poppa bikes sound sort of like a demented cement mixer, I suppose.... but takes all sorts I suppose!

Like I said there's loud, and there's obnoxious....and the two might only be notionally related!

Get itr out, warm it for as little as you can get away with, then just ride it!

As example, it'll be those minutes left idling on the drive that will most likely pizz people off, especially if exacerbated by the local acoustics, A-N-D them people it does pizz off will get it frequently and regularly and be the ones you most likely have to deal with. most often; like when postman cant deliver your e-bay purchases, or the wheelie bin gets nicked by drunks, etc etc etc..... Not the chap in the street, walking his dog, who you probably wont ever see again, and to whom the few seconds you are in his earshot is but a minor annoyance, and no greater than a kid screaming they don't want to go to school today, as they are pulled out of the kiddie carrier!

Hi Teflon-Mike,

Wow, thanks for all that, especially the choke advice.

Incidentally, my pal, who was on the dole, told me that he was able to boil a whole onion in a tin mug using just a tea light candle; he said it took exactly an hour.

D-o-n-t start. When I left to go to uni, my Grandad, gave me a coffee mug, and a very large catering tin of coffee! My Aunt, on the other hand tried to give me 'Digs' cookery lessons, and regaled me with tales of how she used to try cook a sausage, on a dinner fork, over a mass candle! Shocked

Joules! Apparently it takes 1J of energy to raise the temperature of 1cc of water by 1DegC.. we had to test this in O-Level physics lessons with a match, a thermometer and a thimble sized beaker of distilled water.... If I recall, I got bored and tried to prove the melting point of aluminium, with two bunson burners and a 1" cylindrical aluminium 'sample'.. and got the lab evacuated for mercury contamination when the thermometer melted! Laughing BUT apparently a match head contains approximately One Joule of 'potential energy'... it's not very much... but I had to take my Physics master's word for that!

“it takes 1J of energy to raise the temperature of 1cc of water by 1DegC “.

I think that is a calorie; Sodium in a tray of water was my favourite.

Just thrash it from cold? This one piece of advice goes against just about every engineering and / or motoring article / lesson I’ve ever heard.
Ride it gently until it’s warm, yes, then ‘thrash the thing’ if you must but certainly not from cold.
There’s a reason the electronic red line on my bike drops when it’s cold then moves across as the engine gets to temperature...
