Quick question. The box with the x is the onboard network adapter. Its not compatible with the latest windows update so I had to restore to an earlier version. Can I uninstall it and fit a more up to date adapter in the slots circled?

How old is that PC that Windows 10 doesn't support the onboard NIC?

It's old. Embarassed
But its a damn site faster now with the new ssd.
Plus if and when I upgrade, I'll use the ssd in the new one.

One more question, would I have to physically remove the old NIC?

Should be an option to disable the onboard NIC in the BIOS

Most compatible adaptors will be designed for a PCI-express slot, and the slots you highlight are PCI which is completely different. But you have two pci-express slots (the yellow ones) so you can use one of those.

You have two options:
1. Use a USB wifi device.
2. Move your graphics card into the slot below its current one to give it more space. Get a PCI-express network card and put it into the top slot. The second slot is technically slower but your graphics card is slow anyway so it doesn't matter.

You can also get USB-to-Ethernet adaptors. You'll need a USB3.0 port to get close to gigabit speeds.

Updates dont normaly remove support for hardware.
maybe you just need to find a proper set of drivers.

I've had windows totally break a PC by "upgrading" the driver to a new one with no legacy support and that was on XP. It actually broke the computer because it ran into a brick-wall on startup and blue-screened.

I eventually worked out what the issue was and blacklisted the driver but not before I'd had to reinstall the whole operating system.

Looks like there is a workaround to blacklist an update on win 10.

If replacement is an option, you can get Lenovo M900 tiny PCs on ebay for about 100 quid (refurb'd). Half the size of a laptop, and will be supported for quite some time yet....

Because looking at that, he'd need a newer revision, newer socket, newer RAM. Ain't about that.

Its a DDR2 (!) board Neutral

Processor
Intel® Core™2 Quad, Core™2 Duo, Pentium® Dual-Core, Pentium® D, Pentium® 4, Celeron® processors, Socket T (LGA775) Supports Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-Core processors

Chipset
Intel® G31 + ICH7

Front Side Bus
1333/1066/800/533(**) MHz (FSB)

Memory
2 x DDR2 Memory RAM

VGA on Die
Integrated

Expansion Slots
1 x PCIe x16
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI

They do not list network drivers for Windows 10 though, just display... Sad never had Win10 'not' support something.

According to the specs (Foxconn G31MX) the onboard NIC is a RealTek RTL8111B.

What's the card doing with the Win10 drivers? Yellow exclamation with a Code 10?

Might want to try here:

Win 10 x64 / x32 will support drivers that are based on Win 8 / 8.1 and often Win7 with a bit of hacking.

Depends how bored you are tbh and how good your google skills are.

Also USB Nic are available. Or USB Wifi adapters.

Before you do anything, check whether you run the latest motherboard BIOS. You would be surprised how long motherboard manufacturer support their HW.

My current B150 chipset (Skylake) could not do NVME, Kabylake CPUs... and some other issues as new HW standards came. Updating the BIOS/UEFI solved all that, also locked my from OC'ing my CPU, but that was never something I would do. *OC'ing is pointless these days.

Check it, it costs nothing to check it. Thumbs Up

A work colleague has been pricing up some components for me.
Basically I* should be able to build something that trounces my old machine in every department for 200 to 250.

Depends what you actually want to do with it. If this pc is fine for you then even something like a Ryzen 2400G would crush it.
