Hey all. I got my licence this time last year with a DAS course, been riding an XT600 since then. It's been great around town but fairly woeful on the motorways, so I never did as much long distance touring as I thought I would. I never did any green laning with it either so I think I'm just going to embrace my city slicker ways and get a street bike.

Stuff I'd like:
-600+ cc
-half or full fairing
-comfy for long distance, not full-on racey
-max £2250
-2006 or newer, as long as it isn't subject to London's ULEZ charge

So far I've come up with the following bikes:
-SV650S
-GSX650F
-ER6-F
-XJ6 Diversion
-FZ6
-F800S/F800ST
-V-Rod with knobbies

From what I can tell the older SV650s and first generation ER6-Fs are the cheapest of the lot and go for around the same kind of money. Which of the two would be a better choice?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the above bikes or suggestions for other bikes.

I'd have an ER6F over an SV. More refined general design and from what I've seen, better build quality.

Divvy and BMW will be boring., I'd probably have more fun sticking vaguely road-biased tyres on an XT6 (ok, not on the motorway)

Versys? Trailie styling, road bike practicality.

In a similar vein, a late XL650?

Out of those it would be the FZ if I wanted an IL4 or the ER6 if I wanted a twin.

We have an older Fazer for a hack and wifie has an ER6N. I prefer an IL4, she adores the ER6.

Pays your money and takes your choice. Neither are bad bikes.

A very sensible list. Another vote for FZ6.

Nothing wrong with the ER6, but, for me, it's the bike that marked the changeover to ugly plastic ABS bikes. When I first started seeing them on the roads, I knew the countdown clock (to the end of biking as a hobby) had begun ticking. I still see it as representing the ultimate pragmatist-commuter's choice. Pragmatism carried too far will lead to a 125 scooter and head-to-toe bright yellow hi-vis; not for me. Even though the FZ6 is plastic-fantastic as well, its 4-cylinder engine delivers power smoothly, and gives you a lot of control. If it were me, I would rule out the V-rod with knobblies (sounds odd), and make it a stark choice between the SV650S and FZ6. The XJ6 Diversion is a rock-solid reliable bike as well.
