If some of my commutes this winter are anything to go by, quite a bit.

Not sure if you're referring to the ones I linked to, but if so, they're not really like the 3M ones at all. Most obviously in relation to the material - the 3M ones are foam and those I was on about are silicon. Regardless, there are two problems (even though I do rate them) - firstly, you have to moisten them with a bit of gob. Aside from being a bit gross, it's another step - another faff before you can set off, etc. Secondly, with repeated use, you're likely to get a build up of wax and get pretty deaf (because when you put them in, you poke the wax deeper inside - but also, this starts to happen more regularly, for some unknown reason). I've a feeling but no proof that this is worse when using silicon type ear plugs. That said, it actually is - like you implied - having your head underwater! So in that sense they work really well.

I wonder if the foam are better due to absorbing some wax? was thinking about your point other day, pushing wax in etc.

It's a thing - I went to have my ears syringed the other week and she said regular, continual use results in a build up, and that over time this happens more often. As for foam absorbing some wax, I don't know. She didn't mention that because she believes that anything in the ear has the same effect, pretty much.

Three posts before your one:

These are good: "3M E-A-R Ultrafit Reusable Pre Moulded Earplugs". I find them much easier to use than foam ones. If the stem is a nuisance, shorten it.

I was looking at the 3M ones posted 9 posts before mine, which do seem to be of the foam type -

But yeah - the ones you linked to are the 'same' as mine. For the money, they're excellent.
