Thanks a lot for the replies.
Seems to be a lot of support for OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox; and I do like the idea of using those, for various reasons. Presumably to use those, as opposed to a bespoke backup system, I need to use separate software like Windows backup or Acronis (which someone mentioned) - can you use the above three with automatic backup software, then? Cos above all, for me that's what needs to happen!

I know this because when I used to work in an office I made a habit of keeping a personal backup drive in my desk drawer, and I know how often that got updated! Plus, ideally I'd like continuous backups so when my house does burn down, I haven't lost however much data I've created since I last took my backup drive round to my mates...

Ball park figure for retrieval? Can't work it out from the website. That cost's not actually a deal-breaker for me really, as hopefully I should never, ever need to retrieve data from my offsite backup... ____________________ KC100->CB100N->CB250RS--------->DL650AL2->R1200RS->R1250RS |

You can just set up software to sync your files over to an external hard drive. Then every month or 3 just uplug that drive and put a new one in its place. You can do this with 2 drives and cycle them around for one fixed cost similar to a year of onedrive. These will also be "true backups" in that they will be unplugged and offsite and so will be beyond the reach of things like ransomware. They also don't depend on you continuing to pay for onedrive which you may not do for some reason or another.
Cloud services are meant for collaborative work, not so much backups.

You can use the AWS cost calculator to estimate the cost
for the various s3 tiers
