The Rock 2/10
I'd recorded this ages ago and had some sewing to do so thought why not.
Sean Connery plays ex SAS bloke discarded by British gvt.
The other lead character I recognised but name escapes me plays a FBI chemical weapons expert.
Rogue disenfranchised US Army vet plans to hold hostages on Alcatraz whilst threatening to deploy VX nerve gas over San Fran.
So crap on many levels.
I decided to use double stitch on the pockets of my work trousers and then applied Leder Gris boot polish to the Alt-Berg boots as the film played out.
Connery didn't need the money so why appear in a film like that.
Complete pish. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

A bit late to the party but went to watch 1917 at the Imax with wifie.
Brilliant stuff. 9/10 and only dropping a point because, well, nothing is 10 except Nadia Comaneci.
I think that film is a casualty of 'diversity' at the Oscars.
They didn't have a blacks or a womans film so they gave to a yellow persons film instead. Or am I being cynical. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

Although he's been around a while now, I think I've only ever seen Jason Statham as Turkish in Snatch, so when Hummingbird * was on a channel I flicked to on the telly (very late last night) I was like "who's that? I recognise the face..." (cos by the time I started watching it he was about to cut off his long hair and have a shave) and it dawned on me who he was.
I understand he does a lot of action/tough guy flicks which are not really my thing (grown out of them I suppose) ... especially when they're doing the "disordered vet returns from war" thing cos I've kind of grown out of that as well. But I quite enjoyed it anyway.
Inscrutable chinamen
Dead prostitutes
Nuns
Street thugs
Fancy arty stuff
Homeless people
Large quantities of cash
Psychotic posh killer
London scenery
What's not to like.
I guess I'd probably score it about a 7.
*although it was called Redemption when I watched it, which I see is what they called it in America. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

We had the grandkids to stay last night so Peter Rabbit was the choice for the Saturday night film.
I enjoyed it tbh, good CGI, funny moments and a good cast.
I'd give it a higher score than 7/10 but James Corden. |

Uncut Gems
(on Netflix)
Adam Sandler is even more irritating than usual, as a New York jewellery dealer who buys an Ethiopian opal, clearly a bit dodgy because it arrives delivered inside a consignment of salmon.
(a very very beautiful opal - my favourite gemstone, like little galaxies of colour I adore them)
So its something to do with selling it to a basketball star ("LG" , I dunno, just some tall guy from the Celtics) who clearly feels an affinity with the place where its come from ... and then some other stuff with some rapper ("Weekend") and some guy with dreads who might or might not be famous. I dunno who they are, either but there's a lot of people acting cool, going to parties, ducking and diving in true New York style, some loansharks chasing people, trappings of luxury lifestyle, annoying New York accents, and high level betting, etc.
Almost all the characters are living in what appears to be a very high-end lifestyle, obviously with the jewellery, clothes, the huge banknote wads, etc., but the only one who shows any class about himself is this guy WG who is very self-possessed and under-stated even when he's a bit nervous he is cool. Everyone else is ANXIOUS AND SHOUTY ALL THE TIME.
Despite the high levels of anxiety brought about by Sandler just running from one drama to another (mostly of his own creating), its worth sticking with it because (of course) its all based on the outcome of a basketball game with the guy buying the opal, so it gets to be high tension.
I'm surprised to find myself recommending an Adam Sandler film cos in general I can't stand him. But this was pretty good, actually.
There's a guy in it (plays a henchman chasing money) the actor is Keith Williams Richards but I've never heard of him before, he's excellent, kinda looks like Jerry Reed from Smokey and the Bandit, but meaner), he is really good. And a lot of the supporting cast are good, but you forget to notice them cos Sandler is being a dick all the way through.
But for me, the star of the show is the opal.
There is a decent amount of suspense and the ending is EXCELLENT.
8 out of 10. It would be nine but that's just because no matter what he does, Adam Sandler can't help but be teeth-grittingly annoying. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Guns Akimbo - 9/10
Daniel Radcliffe and Samara Weaving star. Danny boy gives it the big 'un behind a keyboard to the host of a nasty tv show. They kidnap him, enter him into the competition. Much action takes place. Funny, sad, entertaining and worthy of a second watch.
Trailer.

Smoking Guns
(7/10)
I spotted this on LondonLive channel, and got drawn in by the immediate familiarity: scummy estate hoodrats with Cockney accents. I wondered if it was a Guy Ritchie but it wasn't "glitzy" enough (ie. no really well known American faces)
In fact the only well known face took a while to show up, and that was Dexter Fletcher who occasionally turns up in something and improves it vastly with his ageing elven features.
But the story was pretty good and it kept me interested. Hoodrat buys gun and takes out a triple bet. Everything and everyone else sort of staggers around that basic plot. It included skanky-looking glue sniffing types, a dodgy Bubble, a fat blonde and some unpleasant Albanians.
I kept thinking "its getting late and I should be in bed" but I kept staying there watching it. The whole shoddy familiarity of lives at the bottom of the pond amongst the dregs of society was actually well captured. I fucking hate betting shops and the action was mostly based in one, but I still kept watching, because bants
Another one with an excellent ending. (I might have cried, I might not)
One or two of the characters were a little too thin on actual character, they could have been fleshed out a bit more, but the acting talent was pretty good and the direction usually brought out the best in them.
I will be looking forward to seeing what else the director to offer. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |
