Hello guys any advice on a rusty exhaust please? Wondering is there a pipe inside the downpipe from the engine because where it has rusted away it looks like there is? I don’t really want to change Exhaust myself For fear of header bolts snapping and taking to a garage just now would cost a bit much.

I’m thinking something like fiberfix heatwrap could patch it up? Doesn’t seem to be leaking much if anything yet hopefully I can fix it up before it does, cheers Neil 👍https://i.ibb.co/Mpnf1Ct/D78607-B8-F965-49-EA-9-AF6-2-CD873749-E04.jpg https://i.ibb.co/zhPqJSZ/D931-FC88-F08-C-49-E9-AB52-1-E1-BC8-EB5-D64.jpg https://i.ibb.co/SckrbQX/F30-DD9-D1-BFF4-40-DE-B460-EEAC7-AEF0-D3-F.jpg https://i.ibb.co/86nQZ05/A5-FAC16-B-FB13-46-D4-88-D8-CD8-CAC88526-A.jpg

It looks to me as though the pipe is coated in a very thick layer of rust which is starting to flake off.

When's the MOT due?

Is that the original exhaust, and what year is it? Thats horrendous Laughing

I'd be wanting rid of that pronto. I dread to think what the header bolts are like, I'd be giving them a daily soak in plusgas or similar for a week then have a go at them, after getting the engine up to working temperature.

You are responsible for the condition of your bike not the m.o.t. tester.
This can be classed as an insecure bike or not roadworthy.

Not sure if it’s original exhaust it’s an 09 bike Though And I’ve had it 2 years just kept outside uncovered. yea header bolts look a bit worse for wear! I’ll give it a go soaking them Cheers. https://i.ibb.co/GVBTJVW/3317-A399-FB5-F-4-C48-AB19-88931-B32-DC59.jpg https://i.ibb.co/cFN4WbP/0-FCAAFB1-DC58-49-CE-B602-BAE08-DAA3-B55.jpg

Cheers! just looked for your ad Looks good! I’m a bit far away from you and posting on gumtree you probably don’t want to post! Besides I’ll have to do a bit of investigating to see which exhausts fit exactly on mine without having to adjust etc

It came off a 2010 EFI,exactly the same model as yours

I told my mate it was sound but slightly rusty and so I cleaned it up
and sprayed it with VHT paint.
A couple of months later he phoned and told me it was blowing and asked me to order a new one.
When he turned up the exhaust was fine he'd just been riding about
with the bolts in the head getting looser and looser until they eventually dropped out!
He knew one had gone at one stage but didn't mention it
Daft clueless sod he is.

If anyone is interested I'll get a door to door courier quote from say Hermes

If there are better/cheaper couriers to use let me know.

If you PM me your postcode, I'll weigh and measure it and
get a quote

Looks like it is double sleeved.

Some Hondas are like that. I normally leave mine until they look like the OP's before changing, too! Laughing Cool

If the part is not hanging off/not supported by its mounting then that exhaust will probably be an advisory.
Maybe not even written up.
The exhaust is not a 'structural'/stressed member so a fail for condition probably is not a worry.

If it is 'blowing'/bypassing the muffler and making a lot of noise (Or blowing hot gas onto legs/feets then a tester may fail it. Or advise in the pass cert.
Then if there is any later legal problem the last mot can be cited as evidence that advice to remedy was given.
Not following that advice in a responsible manner will not look good to a sheriff/magistrate.

Other than that run it till she blows.

""""2.6 Exhaust system
This will be inspected to check:

it’s secure and complete
it’s not too noisy""""

How can an exhaust be complete when it`s dropping in bits?

Also an m.o.t. is only proof off the condition on the day.

GOVERNMENT WEBSITE.

"""Check your vehicle is safe to drive
You’re responsible for making sure your vehicle is always safe to drive (‘roadworthy’). It can be unsafe even if you have a current MOT certificate."""

Also the m.o.t. tester will not pay your fine. Laughing

A set of Lock-On sockets on an impact gun may help with removal, but suppose you could try wiggle them backwards and forwards very slowly with them attached to a ratchet.

Alongside plus gas this may help.

Remember to get a new exhaust gasket ring (small circular gasket that fits in the engine behind the exhaust plate that attaches to the engine).

and will bung in a gasket and wee drop o the old copperslip
The biggest snag as we know is getting the old bolts out
Hope they come out with minimum faff
Once they're out, the rest is easy.

The usual, I suppose. Go for a run, heat it further while still hot, and be careful. There must be a hundred how-to and sob-story threads by now.

Aye, we know that bit thanks. 😂

Do you know the way rust expands like a hoowur so 0.1mm thickness of steel can expand to 7 times it's original thickness when it was steel.

Perhaps the zost just looks shitty rusty but it can easily still be within the limits.

Don't feel triggered. 😟

I have a small set of Stilsons about 6" long
which are useful at times to shift stubborn, rounded off or rusty nuts & bolts.
Only good if you have room to swing them though

Plusgas/WD-Phuquewit/Loos-All/3-in-1 etc. Do Hee-haw for loosening siezed fasteners.

They do a little bit once the hoowur is moving but not worth investing soak time.

A MAPP torch will do a much more satisfying job and will be quicker.

They double as BBQ starters.. 😎

Cheers for all the tips, help and even the exhaust shaming 😂 and cheers to WD forte for sending me a spot on exhaust! After soaking in plus gas all week I Went to fit it today and the left bolt looks like it will come out ok but the right bolt seems to be corroded too much to fit the Allan key! So could be a garage job after all unless there is an easy way to remove it?

Glad it arrived OK.
I presume you don't have a welder to tack a nut on it or know anyone who can do this for you?
Mole/vise grips or small stilsons/pipewrench
might shift it if you can get a very good grip on it.

Good ideas cheers 👍 think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and take it to a garage at least I’ve got the parts now so shouldn’t cost too much hopefully!
