Has it decided to jump into limp home mode cause of the disconnected lambda sensor? Does it even have limp home?

And Nobby gets the prize for being insightful, yes there is a limp mode.

People disconnect the Lambda sensor and plug in a resistor they get from Ebay. This tells the EFI that it needs to enrichen the mixture which in theory gives more power and helps the engine run cooler, of course things don't always work the way people think they should. US models by the way don't use this sensor.

I've no idea why people fit after market filters on these, the originals are washable, last a few years and only cost £40 to replace.

So first job is to reconnect the sensor and see how the bike runs.

One of the problems here is you aren't giving all the information we/I need. I'm having to ferret it out of you which makes everything that little bit harder for us/me to work out what is wrong.

I got no idea why they replaced it either, I do have the replacement air filter but the housing isn't there as the after market is a one piece so I've stuck that one back in.

The weather as stated before has turned for the worst, wind, rain and other not nice stuff, so next time there is a break in the weather and I can get the bike down I'll put the sensor back in and give it a try.

As for information, I don't know what you require. I'm trying my hardest to do things for myself for the first time, the head gasket is supposed to be "reasonably difficult" but I got it done, but, at the end of the day when it comes to mechanics I'm a novice so I don't know what information to give.

The only one I can think of it that the 6k issue was why I thought it was the head gasket and not, say, the water pump, getting to 6k, not revving higher and then conking out and then struggling to restart.

If you want to know anything, ask and if I know I'll tell, I'm here for assistance with my problem so that I can fix it so I know I'm relying heavily on the combined knowledge of people with decades of experience and knowledge so I want to be as helpful as I can but I am a novice so I don't know what info is required to give the best advice in return.

This is why I've got a couple of obd ii dongles. Plugging one in would solve this sort of issue immediately.

If you have anything modern it's stupid not to have one. They are more relevant than feeler gauges these days.

Okay, an update. Following on from advice in this thread re:ignition switch maybe the culprit, I bought a used set of er6 lock set and crossed my fingers that it was the problem. Because of an earlier thread of mine on here I disconnected the battery before removing the Ninja 250 switch and putting in the proper ER6 one.

The result is, I took it for a very short ride which before it would have struggled with and it had no problem revving up high and moving forward. Can't really take it for a longer ride (need an exhaust clamp) but so far it does seem to have been an issue with the ignition switch.

Moral of the story, even if the connector fits, it probably won't work. Thanks for all the advice and inspiration, I'll let you know once I've taken her for a proper ride, if the issues are fixed or if I was counting chickens.
