Will this give me at version of W10 that I can install on a used laptop, and which will not expire or be somehow blocked and that I can use and get updates for?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Windows-10-Pro-32-64-bit-Product-Key-Genuine-Software-Download-Link/293149062172?hash=item44410bb41c:g:e9sAAOSwP1Nc6lB-

.....without any potential dodginess (if potential dodginess, what)?

I'm running win 10/64 pro unactivated on one of my lappys and from what I read

https://www.intowindows.com/how-long-can-you-use-windows-10-without-activation/

I can probably carry on regardless with only minor snags/nags
as it's not a daily user

I was told pukka activation codes are dead cheap nowadays
and cost £10-£15 ish
£1.18 does seem too good to be true but may be worth a try

I bought a product key for Win 10 for about 6 quid (and it wasn't the cheapest by some distance.)

No problems 8 months later on a desktop that spends it's entire time attached to the internet.

Just for clarity, you still need the install ISO which usually about 3-4 GB, mine is.
That Ebay download file is just a product key by the looks of it

Yup. Apologies for not being clear in the OP, I had expected to have to download the O/S. My concern was with licencing.

Paddy would be the best one to ask about this, he does it for a living. Maybe PM him.

When you enter the bios password three times and it then gives you a message about system disabled or something like that, is there also a number?

Unfortunately not. I am thinking of purchasing a chip to solder in. Hm.

Is this laptop... how shall we say? warm to the touch?!

If it's a cheap one you might get away with pulling the BIOS battery otherwise surface mount desoldering can be a right PITA.

No, it's cool, salvage from a defunct outfit, which otherwise & still might be binned. Worth? A ton. or nohing. Removing the battery won't help in this case. Vendor support is no longer available. Just of interest to fix, really. Unfortunately while I are do be a real computer expert, I have managed to avoid M$ Windoze. Still, all computers arer the same computer..... chips afre cheap//.//

Are you sure there isn't. Just smash 6 zeros in repeatedly.

Smile Well I did try it, but... no. Sad

Get the prompt.
Enter 000000
Enter 000000
Get virtual kbd
Enter 000000
-> "Locked, press power to restart".

I know the feeling: you have something that could be perfectly usable, with a little work, and it seems a shame to throw it away.

If it was me I'd see if the flash chip for the BIOS was something generic. You might be able to erase it in place or failing that, off the board.

Reminds me... back in the day O2 stored credit on a flash on the phone (rather than the network end) and I used to make a tidy sum making "bashers" using a replay attack Smile

Yes I had a Philips hand set that could do that, something about it being the same chip as the playstation or someone said.

'S an HP probook, probably bricked. Only options so far seem to be swapping the CMOS or an amusingly dodgy procedure of shorting two pins on the chip to reset.

That 'amusingly dodgy procedure' isnt uncommon on EEproms.
I did it recently on my lads 'smart' house alarm which shit the bed
and no one knew the master code to get at the good stuff.
(the robbing sods at ADT wanted a £180 quid starter for the pleasure, told em eff off)
Didn't let any smoke out and he now has full control again

Heh. Took a couple of goes, but it's working.

"Warning: This BIOS is not for production use"
"Product information not valid"

Well twiddledy-dee. Fix that later.

W10 Pro just installed. I've got to find the flaming key again now. Where did I put it....

Ubggre. I have so far failed to find out how to re-enter data in the BIOS, which oddly enough updated successfully despite the missing data, e.g. serial number. I suspect that's why the O/S install has thought it fit to install Windoze 10 32-bit on an x86 system, and why the activation key server tells me to eff off (or the ebay seller sold the key to a number of people, it's been a while...).

Old HP Probook 650 G1. Poxy thing.

Blast! The poxy thing's now had about 1/3 pt of coffee spilt over the keyboard, from a nearby spillage. It's upside-down with the battery out, waiting to dry. I suppose I ought to take it apart. Groans of enthusiasm...
