What are some decent quads w/ 4WD w/ small-ish capacity lumps for low grade utility crap - i.e. pulling little trailers w/ bails and horse shit etc. And which could be used by e.g. 12 year olds with no brains who're probably going to be a bit clueless and perhaps even reluctant.

Do I even need 4WD? Probably not. Just thought it would be easier to use - will probably have to tackle mud.

Budget £1k to £2k. Cheers.

Or a jimny. Or if you can find one that hasn't rotted away yet, a daihatsu 4-trak.

Less fuel, less maintainance, cheaper and less likely to be stolen.

Ban them from using high range if they can't be trusted.

Quad BIKE - like a Kawasaki Klf300, etc.

Not sure how strong they are nor if they have a hitch point but I should think they could pull a small bale or two of hay. Or an empty trailer for shit picking a paddock or whatever.

I was going to suggest a Suzuki Jeep too, TBH. Actually I was going to say 'Land-Rover' but the little 80" is now regarded as a 'classic' and a tad expensive.

Old S1 Disco's, if they haven't completely rotted away by now, though are pretty cheap, and have many advantages. Not least they have a roof and a heater.. if either work and don't leak... Off road they are the dogs as far as getting places you'd not walk, also a leg-up for a yoof to learn to drive before bein let loos on the road...

Quads are to my mind neither fish nor foul. they are a bit like a scooter and inherently design compromised for the job intended. They aren't a bike, nor a car, and have many of the drawbacks of either and few of the benefits. Like a scooter the start is that the wheels are too little for serious rough off-reading, look at a tractor with 60" tyres and where that can go without four wheel drive. 4wd on a quad wioth diddy little 12" wheels is to a large extent a lot of technology just to overcome pretty fundamental design inadequacy, and so it goes from there....

I would back up to the start, and strip back that a bit more to get to what you are really hoping to achieve.. and for a LOT less than £2K an old MOT fail Disco 1, would carry a lot of bales about the paddock, and not get tangled in the trailer when you have to go backwards..... an SJ or Trooper or whatever else they had in the scrappers at the time, likewise, and could teach teen to use a full size 'car' before tiome came, rather than being given, in thier mind, a rather unspectacular tonka toy or scoota-long to play with.....

So what's the real back story here?

Daughter has horse and is now reluctant to get stuck in the maintenance and field chores.. my guess. Dad attempting to inject some fun into it for her (and him..)

At best a garden implement's 'fun factor'is fleeting... if she cba to do her chores... well, then pandering to her not doing her chores with five minutes of 'fun'wont alter that much.... it'll just be an extra excuse, when its run out of petrol, or the tyres flat, or the hitch dont work to NOT do chores.... and it'll ALL beyour fault...
Meanwhile.... you like green-laning on proppa bikes...
If YOU want 'fun' fireup the KLX... "I'll be back in an hour darling....you better have fed and watered the 'orse!"
You can use the stick as well as more carrots you know! And you dont have to get fun out of what sproglett does!
How much did the bludy equine cost? ?And you want to spend how much MORE cos she CBA to do her bit, now the dawn of reality has struck and its not like the Bunty commics?!
"Oh kay!You got horse, and were told YOU have to look after it... there's a lot more to it, ISN'T there, than prancing around the poles whenever you like..... either YOU do your chores or the 'orse goes to some-one who WILL do thier chores!"(And I'll buy another motorbike to pigg about on the lanes with! It's harsh. but... you dont re-enoforce failure of one expensive gift buying more!
Meanwhile them old Disco's still have many merits.... especially if you like mud-larkin'! If YOU want to inject a little 'fun'... in fact Didn't I give you a set of OS maps on disc?

The area that needs working is now considerably bigger, the number of animals to look after has increased and the list of jobs has got longer. A 4wd or 2wd quad bike with trailer etc. could be useful.

People are confusing proper working farm-type quad bikes with the rather silly road going variants.
2wd would be OK with decent tyres but 4wd in reserve for the muddy gate or slightly too full trailer will be invaluable, if it's hilly 4wd every time.
If looking at an older one - a bit battered but mechanically sound - Honda is about the best, others have come on a lot lately CanAm is big now round here and they even have decent security like immobilisers built in. Yamaha are OK too but Kawasaki have a reputation for fragility as they age.

You should be able to find a Honda TRX or a Suzuki Ozark in your price range. But tbh I would not consider buying one of these, or any quad for a 12 year old. I have ridden quads on many farms for years now, and rolled them more times than I can count. A 300cc quad is going to weigh at least 150-200kg and they can be very tricky to control and very easy to roll. If you don't know what you are doing a quad bike can get you into a world of trouble very quickly. My advice would be to buy a small tractor. You could probably find a serviceable small Massey or Farmall in your budget and maybe even a Ford. This will be much easier and safer to drive than a quad.
