Hi I have 1986 suzuki savage, the clutch was slipping a bit in 4th gear
I had to take the engine to install a new piston and cam, whilst I was at it I checked the clutch plates they had hardly any ware and a small bit of glazing on 2 of the steel plates
after soaking all the plates in brake fluid for 24 hours I cleaned up the glazed plates with a light abrasive, all the plates look and feel perfect.
I rebuilt the engine and used a small amount of Grophogen on the cam, this bike has a wet clutch (the oil in the sump also lubricates the clutch) now the clutch slips in all gears until warm but it still slips even when warm
I changed the oil to silkolene comp 4 10 w 40 in case the old oil had moly in it.
could either the wrong oil or the graphogen permanently ruined my friction plates?
Can you use graphogen on bikes with wet clutches
many thanks Nick

Did you check the plates for warpage?
Did you check the springs were still in spec?
Is your basket fucked?

Just replace the clutch pack. It's cheap and will save all this messing around.

Can't think why it would be a good idea. I'd be inclined to clean it all off, put it all back together, and check the adjustment.

Might be useful:

First things first check the clutch cable for free movement and if it has the cable going to the left side of the engine - check the pushrod clearance.

the push rod is 12.5mm as spec
when re-assembled there is a couple of mm play when you move the lever that depresses clutch push rod
they do 3 different push rods, but my plates are not worn, so I should not have to change it according to the manual

Please say you didn't actually soak your clutch plates in brake fluid then put them back in your engine.

In that case they've probably disintegrated. You should only use it to clean the metal plates.

Yes. Soaking in a highly volatile solvent won't have done the friction plates much good. You normally soak them in oil.
