tl;dr How do you make a 1000cc superbike wheelie in 3rd/4th so easily?

Been playing with wheelies for a few more months now and I've plateaued at chasing them out in 2nd. I've become fairly consistent at getting them up and chasing them these days so I'm happy with the progress so far.

I know I need to go higher if I want to carry them for longer, and I'm slowly adding height at my own pace through practice (in no rush to loop my bike).

I want to be able to hold one for around 10-15 sec before I'm satisfied that I can wheelie (this ceiling always keeps changing with each milestone though Laughing).

Shifting from 2nd to 3rd mid-wheelie drops the front immediately, so I'm not high enough in the wheelie to start shifting. I'd rather get comfortable with higher wheelies before I go back to practicing that again.

A few months back I was messing with clutching it up in 3rd and the two times I did this, it came up way smoother and the throttle response to lift the front wasn't so aggressive.

This felt so much more manageable once the front had lifted into the air- but I've only pulled this off twice by playing around and don't know how to really do this on command. I think if I practiced 3rd gears this could teach me a lot more than 2nd gears, similarly to how 1st gears became irrelevant when I started learning 2nd gears.

What I remember doing in 3rd gear was dumping the clutch while going 80+ and yanking on the handlebars as hard as I could while throwing my weight back in the seat- but the effort it took to actually get the front to lift initially was huge, so I think I did this incorrectly and I think this is punishing the bike with a terrible lack of technique.

I see and hear people saying how easy it is to clutch a 1000cc super bike in 3rd and 4th doing sit-downs by just pinging the clutch out with the correct technique, but this doesn't seem to work for me so I'm obviously doing it completely wrong.

Does anyone have experience with doing this and if so, what bike are you on, and what Speed/RPM are you doing this at before you dump the clutch?

90ish mph on mine in 3rd.

Never really managed it in 4th, but then again... 3rd gear goes to 150+ and I'd rather not ride that out on one wheel, purely because lamp posts.

Why? They're not going to chase him, are they, all followed by dogs trying to bite meef and widdle on the lamp-posts at the same time?

Nope. You've got to keep an eye out for scaffold tubes.

Never saw the point of anything other than 2nd gear for wheelies on my K5 thou. On the power at 50mph, dab of clutch to lift, and front would be high enough by about 80 to keep it there forever - just have to lean off the side of the bike to see where the hell you're going Laughing Could obviously take it a lot faster as there's still loads left in 2nd on those bikes.

It's what happens* to BCF members when they fuck up a wheelie.

Edit: *Or more correctly, happened.

I really wouldn't advise learning wheelies on a new gen4 RR, get something cheap that you don't mind looping.

Get your clutch up technique sorted before anything else (slow and high 2nd gear).

Your trying to run before you can walk but you already know that.

I assume you are not doing this in the present but just looking for advice for after the event.

Don't think the NHS need any more beds taken up with people practising wheelies right now.

if you do a wheelie now and crash its not the impact that will kill you.............it the covid19 that will get you in hospital........leave the wheelies alone for now till this shit is over lol!

Haha okay I'm really curious- I've missed something. Someone link the thread?

Also just to clarify I haven't been out riding since even before the lock-down started and don't plan to.

The most I've done is clean the bike and that was just today.

Lost one eye to a scaffold pole through car windscreen, just to tie up that last loose end.

No advice to give on the wheelying other than as mentioned I'd give it a break until this covid malarky has run its course.

He did like to antagonise people though, both IRL and online. Not to mention the rozzers...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Is that the guy who welded a sprocket onto an output shaft and used to ride a varadero?

I remember years ago logging in and there would be these mental workshop questions followed by people saying dont do it it's just stupid.
