I've been quite intrigued by The Longest Day Down challenge (although these days they go up, from Land's End to John O'Groats in 24 hours). Thankfully it has nothing to do with Ewan and the Other One. Riders are supposedly required to attempt the journey on a bike costing £300 (not including tyres, brakes or cost of MOT). Looking at some of the competitors I think that rule is flouted somewhat. In fact I thought it was impossible but I just came across this amusing ZZR600 for £500 on Facebook which might fit the bill with some negotiation. I believe the 2020 event is fully booked though.

Anyway, what bikes can you find which qualify?

As horrendous as that Z looks I'd ride it that route happily. Those things are hard to kill and all day comfortable.

However in the spirit of the game, I've searched up to £500 assuming you can bargain or just cheat.

XJ600, boring way to do it https://www.gumtree.com/p/yamaha-motorbikes/yamaha-/1369524420

CZ175 The LOL way to probably fail https://www.gumtree.com/p/cz-motorbikes/1975-cz-175-sport-two-stroke-project-bike-45-years-old./1369506519

Triumph Trophy, bit hacked about big torquey motor though https://www.gumtree.com/p/triumph-motorbikes/triumph-trophy-1200-1992-lots-of-extra-bits/1369224787

GPZ600, spend 15 hours singing top gun tune while the thing leaks fuel https://www.gumtree.com/p/kawasaki-motorbikes/kawasaki-gpz-600-ninja/1368921004

LE - JOG on a 600/750 in 24 hours , pah! Easy.
Using motorways and it’s not going to be hard.

Try doing LE - JOG on a sub 350 without using motorways, then it will be more of a challenge Thumbs Up

Looking at their facebook pics there is a guy on a 996, love to know where you can get them for close to £300 Laughing

I like these sort of things where people buy shit bikes but I really doubt if half the bikes I see in the pictures cost £300. Makes it all a bit pointless really.

Also it's quite how it's called the website URL is the longest day down, the title is the longest day and the banner says the longest day up. Just pick one and stick with it Laughing

It's not a race, the challenge is to get a cheap old nail to complete the trip.

I do think "£300" is bollocks though. A while back I was looking for any sort of project bike for a few hundred quid and there wasn't much of interest, so a £300 runner seems unlikely. There's an apparently long-term derelict Suzuki RF900 in the multi-storey at work which I keep looking at. £300 would seem too low for it though.

I never thought it was a race.
However in the initial post, there is a mention of doing the trip within 24 hours.

My point was about how even with a tatty old big bike there wouldn’t be that much of a challenge imho, especially if motorways are used.

I would be nervous to attempt LE - JOG on any bike I had only paid £300 for.

I do wonder if the get out clause is "not including tyres, brakes or cost of MOT" , if I buy a frame for £300 the following £1500 is the cost of getting it through MOT Laughing

Had a flick through the facebook and theres a lot of "oh it wont run right so I'll just take my expensive touring bike instead".
I think £500 would be better and still make sure it's enough of a shitbox to keep things entertaining.

It must be that time of year, my local Enfield bunch are talking about doing a "Slow Way Down"; no bike bigger than 250cc and no smaller than 90cc. Max budget £650. Possibly following Nathan Millward's Garbage Run route :-

I fancy camping, they want to book Premier Inns Smile

Anyone thinking of doing it remember you got to do it twice - home to start, do the trip, end to home.

Now see that particularly appeals to me, being a bit of a 250 fan.

Aye, I was going to leave it at John O'Groats and walk back.

I think there's a broom wagon but I don't know if it fetches bike as well as rider.

Cycle racing term. A broom wagon is a vehicle that follows a cycling road race "sweeping" up stragglers who are unable to make it to the finish.
