https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/news/thames-valley/news/2020/may/18-05-2020/appeal-for-witnesses-after-horse-rider-suffers-serious-injuries--south-oxfordshire/

Horse spooked by off-road bikers, horse rider badly hurt, bikers fail drugs test or were in possession. Without the drugs element you might ask whether the bikers were at fault.

I recall telling a horse-riding friend about encountering horses and riders on a country lane where one took such fright I turned round and went the other way. I asked my friend what was the best way to respond; wait for the horse to be brought under control (all the while in its view) or slip past slowly and quietly. She said it depended on the horse!

Horses do make a proper mess of a bridle path too, comparable to vehicles.

I'm not anti-horse, just looking for some perspective in the news.

“We also need to establish if the bikes were using the bridleway or footpaths, which would be a public place, or whether they went deeper into the woods, which would have been more private."

What difference does that make? Using a motor vehicle on a footpath or bridleway isn't a police matter, trespass is a civil matter. Only one of the five were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Wonder what powers the police used to seize all five bikes and the transit van.

Meh, horses are dangerous. Laughing

Sounds like a tragic accident and the bikers were unlucky to get caught with some weed.

Section 34 of the Road Traffic Act.

For info in most cases on a narrow track it would likely be best to stop engine and let them walk past, don't make any sudden movement even a friendly wave, and give them adequate time to get well clear before restarting.
If the horse is known to be easily spooked or the rider is not overly confident it would be best if they turned round and got into a place with more clearance.

The unpredictability of horses knows no bounds, the daftest thing like a shred of plastic stuck on a bramble can be the scariest thing imaginable - even if they went past it ten times before already.

Bear in mind they weigh most of a ton and have long legs than can lash out further than you expect. You are as much in danger as the rider if they start than spinning round carry on.

Still none the wiser as to what offence they might have committed. Wink

Driving mechanically propelled vehicles elsewhere than on roads? Which is a statuatory offence.

EDIT and there are no byways anywhere near there.

Horse riders hate us (generally), my daughter is one so I should know! Last week coming home from work, a 'spirited' journey, over took a car on a wide two full-width lane main road stretch to see two horse riders coming the other way once I had completed the overtake (they didn't spring up on me immediately or anything, by the time the overtake was complete they ere still some way in the distance). Immediately cut the engine, reduced speed and coasted by slowly. I thought this was a very thoughtful and courteous action on my part. Apparently not, got a barrage of abuse and hand gestures. Horses were completely unfazed. No doubt they just heard the exhaust and the revving engine from the overtake and immediate got their backs up and decided I was some sort of scum, never mind the fact that once they were in view I done everything within my power to be as respectful and courteous as possible.

They ride two abreast round my way on narrow country lanes. Cretins!

I live near an area frequently used for horse riding, and the worst thing is turning a corner to suddenly find a freshly laid massive horse cake in the middle of the road.

Can't believe there's not more accidents from sliding on horse shit.

I've never figured out why it's ok to let your horse shit all over the place in public without clearing up after it but if you let your dog do that or even better if we decided to do it we'd be slated Thinking

Plus horses seem capable of producing a surprisingly large amount, from my experience. Way more than dogs.

Mandatory basic training for horses should sort out these problems with at least one module consisting of this.

No sympathy here. I live near a Polo and Saddle club you can imagine my disdain for the road hogging, arrogant fuck wits with their giant piles of shit on the road and the silly arrogant little arm gestures they make if you dare use a ICE vehicle within a mile of them.

If Lycra clad cyclists are road cancer then the posh horse twats are road AIDS. Both serious irritations that we seemingly can't defeat.

Although it should be remembered that the horse in question here was not on the road. Almost certainly on a bridleway looking at the article. Which is for horses, cyclists and pedestrians and definately not motor vehicles. It also encountered a bunch of idiots on trailbikes (and do we think they were road legal?) who were off their tits on something.

I'm a horse rider. I don't hate us. I didn't hate us before I was one of us either. In fact I never had any beef with any particular road or bridlepath user other than the specific individuals who behaved inconsiderately, be they on foot, bikes or in a vehicle. I know a lot of horse riders and the subject of bikers just doesn't come up. I think we flatter ourselves that we matter that much to them (us).

The case in the OP is as Stinkwheel puts it - it's not about conflict between legitimate road users, it's someone with life-changing injuries caused by reckless twats who happen to have been on bikes. In my mind they are not 'us' either.

OS map showing the "bridleway in a wooded area in College Woods, just off Deadman’s Lane, Goring Heath, which is accessed from the A4074" and there are no byways at all around there.

At least they didn't just fuck off though. Okay in most circumstances waiting around until the police arrive isn't the smartest idea but with the horse person injured seriously enough for the air ambulance to be sent, it is right to not leave that person on their own to wait for help to arrive.

Couldn't agree more, just like the bikelyf scumbags blocking main roads to use as their personal stunt pad, or scrotes in local parks on tearing around on pit bikes.... "They" are not "us" in my eyes.

Yes, I checked the online version of the Oxfordshire definative rights of way map and there are no unmetalled roads or byways in that area legally accessible to motor vehicles.

Unless, I supopose, they had the landowners permission to be there.

I've ridden those bridlepaths a bit (on a MTB and gravel bike) - some great trails amongst the woods which would be very attractive to a motocross/enduro bike and easy to access too. Just not legally.

I did once stumble across a porn film shoot in those woods - probably not relevant to this discussion though.

Yeah I agree but I wasn't really replying to the OP's topic specifically, I was just jumping on the bandwagon to have a moan about horse riders and cyclists, especially because of the encounter I had recently where I done everything within my power and made a huge effort not to spook the horse (I don't think many bikers would bother to actually cut their engine and slow right down and pull way over to the far left so they're virtually in the gutter) and still I got slated by the horse rider. Both cyclists and horse riders are a menace round my way :-/

Being a default horse owner I have to agree with doggone, they are the stupidest animal when they want to be.

Being so big if something sets one off don't be in the vicinity,

This case though if the bikers were riding illegally on bridleways or footpaths they should have the book thrown at them.
