This end of Wilts is shut down. Even the army are starting to throw extra barriers up on their gates. Amazing to see, if mildly worrying.

While I think solo motorcycling around my local lanes is a pretty harmless thing to do, when doing it yesterday I saw lots of (vulnerable) people in groups in any town/village I passed through...... not a harmless thing to do.

It would be hypocritical of me to preach that people should stay indoors while posting pictures of me and bikes in the sun. So no more bike jollies for me for a bit. I'm a key worker so won't get total cabin fever as I have to commute at least once a week.

I'm not a fan of having my liberty taken away, I spent my 20's in uniform swearing to defend that liberty. I think though it's time we all accept it for a short period.

For those of you here on BCF that work in the Healthcare system and those of you out tramping on the roads keeping us supplied, good luck. You are the soldiers in this and I salute you.

This was Monday, day before lockdown. I did think it was selfish to head out, because spannering myself / others is definitely something NHS would not have needed.

But still went out. Took it steadier. And compared to a week ago, there was a lot more traffic. Especially around Petersfield, it was busy!

Stopped for fuel twice + grabbed food from same place, used nitrils.

Guildford to Christchurch and back, 190 miles. And that marked the end of "the season".

Don't say that you'll be inviting he whose name shalst not be spoken to a thread of positivity.

I headed out on Saturday last week for one last go; didn't stop and speak to anyone, already had fuel so didn't need to stop.

RoadRiders got thoroughly run in and now I have a problem - I'm scraping solid metal objects on an Enfield Laughing Gotta slow it down....

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49699988681_397f5e7a60_c.jpg

Went here to see this - I'd seen it before, but it's as good a place as any to ride out to around here; the roads through the Dengie Pensinsula are good when the traffic is quiet.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49699988626_d792d88d82_c.jpg

It's the boat....that ROCKED. Radio Caroline. Still broadcasting.

And then I stopped back at Hanningfield Reservoir for a break on the way back.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49699459493_b273bf8645_c.jpg

That Civic Type R there was one of about 8 cars out on a jolly. There were a group of three I had followed earlier - a GT86, Golf R and something else I can't quite remember. I think they were quite upset I'd stuck with them on an Enfield Laughing.

Last one for a while I guess. When it's all over first job will be to take the KTM in and get shot.

That bike needs a different tail, something more traditional British looking, bike would look stunning then.

Now we can ride to Newcastle to go sunbathing, I thought I'd post a few from the past weeks. I've been quite lucky with legit excuses to get out and about.

Tail tidy with some home made (with an angle grinder) stubby exhaust? Thinking

I think the entire tail & seat looks a bit 1980's Japanese Sports Tourer, which isn't in itself bad but the front end looks likes old school Brit.... they clash a bit (just my opinion).

Just googled it though and the bike has a seat cowl to cover the pillion part....... it looks complete with the seat cowl.

Google Honda GB500. There was a GB250 as well that looks like something Norton would make, if they didn't go bankrupt at that time, again.

The engine used in the GB250 is rather impressive, compared to the XBR/GB500 engines. It is a twin carburetor single cylinder, lacking about 11kW, but it revs above 10k rpm, which is way more than what an XBR/GB 500 engine can do, plus the GB250 weighs only about 130Kg (XBR is 20Kg heavier, the GB500 is 27Kg heavier), and goes as fast as, if not faster than, the 0.5L variants. The 250 also runs a 6 speed gearbox, unlike the 0.5L variants that have only 5 gears in the box.

Could the gearing (one extra gear, while the top gear being overdrive) be the reason why the 250 runs as fast as the 500? Also, as mentioned, the 500 engines can spin the crank 50% slower than the 250.

I'm gonna do some experiments with the final drive gear ratio, then. 3K rpm on the XBR, using the top gear, gets you comfortable 60mph. Thinking

*There were also 400cc variants.

Here's a nice review of the GB 250: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkrg-0VXT9Y

Yesterday evening ..

Lovely ride out to Bewdley, first proper ride out for the nipper's friend on her Superlight - Merchants chips ummmm. Social distancing maintained at all times, nipper and her friend spent some time together for the first time in ages, even if they stil had to keep 2m apart. Whereas, we sat on another bench and ate our chips Laughing

Got up early decided to ride to the Coast and back before breakfast.

Part 1 of my plan went well, empty roads to Christchurch and almost nobody at Mudeford.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49906169182_4bd6f5bcb9_h.jpg

Then this happened. Cable was new.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49905868721_9547560cbf_c.jpg

Tried a few dumb ways to get going, realised I wasn't going to get the 50 miles home so got to spend a couple of hours at this lovely location.

Mate with a box trailer came and collected me.

I was just down the road at Lepe. But thought the opposite. I left Guildford around 1pm and traffic was busy all the way to the New Forest.

It wasn't peak summer busy (no jams), but steady. Lepe car park was 70% full.

However, everyone left before 5pm and did enjoy the ride back on largely empty roads.

195 miles

When I say early I was at Mudeford by 0800. This time of year it's great, just warm enough, roads dry and totally empty (also no twat with a speedgun is up at that time). When I came back in the van around lunchtime though it was bad, the A338 had multiple huge packs, bigger than you see riding to Poole Quay usually along with many smaller groups.

I forgot Lepe existed. Might head down next weekend, haven't been there for a long time.

I had a couple of short-lived clutch cables on a cb500. Turned out I hadn't been rigorous enough about determining the correct year of manufacture. I was out by one year and apparently the clutch cables are different from e.g. '97 - '98. Everything else is identical. Wtf.

Still enjoying being able to get out of town, today it was a shopping trip to Asda, in Stafford, took a scenic route back via Haughton, Bradley, Levedale & Penkridge. Roads still relatively quiet, saw a few out on their bikes..

Took a bumble down to Cheddar Gorge, got slightly hoonigan-ish on some of the roads.

There wasn't a great deal of people about, due to the current covid situation and far less of the old couples in cars, going along at sub 30 miles an hour, staring at the scenery.

New addition of a full Akrapovic system to the bike made for a lot of fun too.

Very pleasant ride overall.

They've done it up winter before last. Did away with the small transport cafe and replaced it with a large diner type thing.

On the plus side you can (sans covid) get a decent feed for not bad prices considering.

On the downside, as a nice little escape destination, its become a lot busier. But can't really complain about that.

mmmm. lots of folk not too happy with it. Some people just like a moan don't they.

There's something very photogenic about some old railway stations, granted, Wolverhampton Low Level is no longer an active station, but, it's been quite nicely repurposed as an event venue.

Seem to mostly moan about service speed at a tourist trap Rolling Eyes

Ham, eggs and chips looks good and the view looks good. I can live with slow service.

Noisy lobster down Mudeford way is worth a visit, though don't order the actual lobster (defrosted Canadian), burgers are/were 8.5/10.
