What should I look for 60x60 40x80, etc, what does it all mean?

The first number is the magnification, the second the objective lens diameter. Larger objective diameter means it gathers more light, higher magnification means that it's harder to hold steady.

10 x 50 is usually a good compromise.

What are you going to use them for?

As Islander says, it really depends on what you're using them for, might also be worth looking at Zoom binoculars as well.

I was after something for general perving and taking in the view when out and about so asked the perv at work (also a serious 'twitcher').

Told him my budget and he recommended to me Bak4 prism 388ft @ 1000yrds 8x42 by Tom Lock.

They're brilliant for budget bins. I can see the hair on nipples.

£100 new

In short they punch well above their weight.

I have a pair of Olympus 8 x 40 on the boat for general every day use. Mainly nature watching and perving.

They are great, not too big and easy to use. Cost about £50/60 if I remember right.

I have a pair of Jessops 10x50. For a budget pair they do have very good clarity and are not too heavy to hold steady for a couple of minutes.

My favourite binoculars are 8x42 Zeiss - my sister brought three pairs back from the factory in East Germany as was. They're light, bright and very sharp. Smile

We used to have Zeiss bino's on the older ships. Lovely kit.

I had a Zeiss Freiberger sextant earmarked for liberation when I took the Galeomma to scrap but someone beat me to it. Evil or Very Mad

Most important is exit pupil

Are related.

Edit: Anyone who uses binoculars is a raging Durty Burtie.

Unless you're going to be using them for astronomy I wouldn't overcomplicate things with exit pupil measurements Wink

Something like 10 x 50 or 8 x 40 would probably work for you.

This site should give you some ideas...

I bought a pair of Chinon 7-15x35 rapid zoom binoculars from a bloke around the corner from me a few weeks ago.
The bloke himself was getting on a bit and these binoculars actually belonged to his grandad.
You can see they're old but in superb condition and everything works perfectly, very smooth indeed with excellent clarity.
