I must admit, although I like the latest doctor, I get a bit cross when she just goes "pointy tweak tweak" of her fountain pen and it all magically gets solved.

The older ones used to have some sort of different funky ways of resolving the crisis, all a bit more Fred Dibnah.

I've got a RC Dalek up on the shelf.
I still don't like it much but 2 of my therapists say it might help
with my night terrors and cure my bed wetting problems

Mmm... worth a reminder that Newton's Principia is over 4 centuries old, ffs Shocked

For my money a good fantasy tale or sci-fi yarn just needs one central conceit while the rest of the fabricated world remains true to expected norms. Really good ones display "The butterfly and tornado effect" where the author does something like "if only we had true AI..." and it all goes off at a tangent. For example Humans where very little our known world has changed. The subplot of social services trying to foist a new android onto the old man is particularly believable and tragic fait accompli.

Cigarettes which make a really loud fizzing sound when you inhale.

And when a car arrives at it's destination having been driven for miles, there's still clouds of water vapour emerging from the exhaust, almost as if the engine's completely cold.

It's funny how once you've noticed this stuff you see it every single time.

Was reminded of another one while watching 'Ozark' on Netflix last night. One of the protagonists has just received an Important Letter which was being handed to him by someone else. "Oh God", I thought. "Don't say it...", but he did.

"I can't open it... you open it for me and tell me what it says..."

That reminds me, (-and I'm not sure it's a cliche but...) whenever I've heard Andie MacDowell say the line, "Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed," I've guffawed and/or groaned.

When talking on mobile phones the display stays on, can’t think of a phone that doesn’t have a proximity sensor.

Also no bad guys have iPhones, Apple doesn’t allow it.

It's not a cliche, but people using phones on screen very rarely say 'bye.
Maybe it's not something they do in Americle.

When people are eating - not fast food - at a table, with cutlery. Watch as they push the food around, put it on the fork, tap it on the plate so it falls off and they can push it around again.

I know it must be a continuity issue and cuts and retakes mean they can’t actually eat the food, but it’s maddening to watch them pretending

You're watching some yank tv programme downloaded offn that interweb
and every ten minutes it seems, a banner pops up saying
"you are watching......."
which has me screaming
"I fuckin know what I'm fuckin watching you crass fuckin yankee fuckin twatbastards!!!!"
or words to that effect

This often interspersed with banners about shit that's on later or next week
WTF?
US telly must be the pits if the dumb bastards put up with that bollox.

I'd say that's a forgivable failure in the medium. IIRC on something like Emmerdale they used to have shandy instead of proper pints but the actors used to stretch things out and end up putting enough away to get pissed anyway Smile Then they changed to water with food colouring.

Another failure in the medium is when they do the over the shoulder shots of two characters conversing. They have to do it in two takes from both viewpoints and often the cheeky thesps not in shot just go "blah blah blah" or pull faces. Once you realise this you quite often see the two conversation pieces don't sync up.

Ye gods, yes! One of the reasons for the rise of Netflix, Prime, etc. as they don't need to do such stupid shit.

I worked with a lad whose career goals were acting. He had an actors guild card and everything. Or whatever it's called. Also a degree in acting.

He said that most background actors are taught to mouth the word "rhubarb" on repeat, because it's the best way to feign conversation without actually saying anything.

Very much this.
I was watching the latest Westworld last night and just this happened. She put the phone down and I thought why not say bye, or over.

Americans have the attention span of a gnat. Coupled with the amount of ad breaks, it's impossible to keep track.

My pet peeve from US TV Shows, you have an ad break, then when the show restart you have 5 mins of catch up from the previous 10 mins of the show. A lot of UK based shows on the less premium channels now do it so they can flog it off to overseas networks.

As opposed to Jaguar, who positively embraced the bad guy. Thumbs Up

Heh. My nephew was an extra in "The Crown" - he played one one of the boys at Prince Charles' school. One evening he got home after a day on set and told his mum he didn't want any tea because he felt sick "because I've had 14 bowls of soup today" Laughing

I was involved in some filming 5 years or so back with the Beeb, one of the elements was an on-location interview and they filmed a sequence of me literally just nodding and acknowledging to total silence (which feels really odd to do) which they later dubbed over the sound of the other person responding to my question. I now can't help but watch closely at things like "Inside the factory" (where there are a lot of straightforward interview sequences) and can spot Greg Wallace's same "nodding clip" being re-used throughout multiple sections of the programme.

I get the impression this is quite common now as typical filming teams are pretty small, often only one camera, so they have to be inventive.

Known as the 'noddies' I believe. You see it done all the time on the TV news.
