Noticed the odd bike with one on, usually a bike loaded up for touring.
You can get them on ebay for 40 quid or less and they're supposed to be:

Warming in winter
Cooling in summer
Prevents numb ass even after hours of riding.

I get a dead ass after about 2 hours on my bike with stock seat. I could blow £250+ on some aftermarket Mustang, or I could go with the sheep skin. Or a gel pad?

Example of gel pad:

Universal sheep skin:

I have one. It's not a panacea but it helps. particularly in hot weather actually because it isn't quite as sweaty as sitting on a sheet of vinyl and you don't burn your arse if the seat's got mad hot in the sun and you're wearing thin trousers.

They don't soak up water, it just sits on the surface.

I put a bit of grip mat under mine because it had a tendancy to move about.

Best way to do gel pads is to remove the seat cover, cut a hole in the foam and insert a gel pad then re-cover it. The ones you get for wheelchairs are pretty cheap.

That said, 2 hours riding is probably time for a short break really?

I've seen me put on cycle shorts if I know I'm going to have to do an epic run.

I can’t say I’ve ever tried sheepskin seat covers.
However I have got one of the Airhawk seat covers on one of my bikes and it makes a significant difference in the amount of time I can spend in the saddle.

I used one on my Goldwing and it was really really good. It made it a lot more comfortable for long distances on a bike that was already comfortable and then used it on my Tiger Explorer where it really made a difference as well.

This was a sheepskin bought from a shop that dealt with leathers. Good quality, well tanned or whatever the preparation is called. It wasn't cheap.

It's not so good when it rains though. Soggy bottom and all that.

I'd have one on my Trophy but it's got heated seats so hot smelly wet sheepskin is not going to be on offer. Laughing

I use one of those £10 fake sheep skin's from IKEA when I'm touring. I do believe it helps for those days when you have to do 600 miles.

I used a sheep skin touring Scotland once, just the once. All was fine in the dry, but once it rained I had to stop using it as it got so wet it took about a week to dry out.

Used once on a Pan for touring Italy / France.

Good for keeping the seat cool in the hot sun.

So I got one and can confirm it keeps the seat cooler and does DELAY the sore/numb arse by about an hour. The problem is once I get it, it doesn't go away.
I.e. riding for 2 hours, starts to get numb/sore. I get off, walk around for 10 mins, get back on, now its numb in half an hour. Get off, 10 mins walk, get back on, now its numb in 20 minutes etc.
Maybe i'll naturally get the 'iron butt' by going on more regular longer rides. I could try some padded cycling shorts as well
