I'm buying my mum a 125 scooter so she doesn't have to take the train to work.

She got her license in 89 and it says on the back she's passed her A license and has full motorbike privileges, although having only ever driven cars.

CBT test centres are closed for now and she trusts me enough to give her instructions on how to get going. Is this all it takes? Her license says she can ride bikes so is it really all that simple?

I've got 2 helmets with Cardo intercoms, and my own bike I can follow behind her on.

If she's got group A, whe must have done some motorcycling. Are you sure? Look up the entitlement on line.

"Licence", by the way. The word's actually written on the thing, with the correct spelling.

She's quite sure she's never been on a bike, we're both laughing at how over qualified she is.

In 2013 her license was reprinted and it was upgraded to include bikes. I looked on the .gov website, looks like through 86-90 when she took her test there was a bit of a hazy period of rules, now the jurisdiction says she can hop on a gsxr1000.

Well.... look again (in two ways). Pity about that. She'll have to do her CBT. Phone/email around, somewhere may be open, I know people have done renewals recently, it may be possible, and anyway it would be a good idea to get her name on the list now, because there will be a huge backlog.

There were no hazy rules in 89. That's when I passed my car test. I got full moped entitlement but nothing for bike.

All she has is tricycle which is a throwback to harmonisation of classification across the EU.

She'll have c1 and d1 but she cant drive an artic or a bus either.

Less than 8 ton and 15 seats.

If she wants to ride that scooter she'll have to get L-plates and do a CBT.

If she wants to ride a moped she needs to buy one and insure it.

To be honest I'd probably have put her through a days professional training even if her license had included full entitlement.

I know you've got a bike and comms (and to be fair you might be an excellent tutor), but £120 for a full-day with a decent training outfit is probably worth it.

I got my licence in 1980 and also have an 'A' entitlement in column 9. on the back of my licence with the start and finish dates in columns 10. & 11. However I also have in column 12. "79(3)" which is a restriction.

If your mother has any codes in column 12. you can look here

Just saying... Cool

Just to clarify I think he means she'll need to do a CBT in order to ride between 50cc and 125cc but 50cc and under no CBT is necessary.

I think that's right?

Also, no theory is required in any case as she'll be riding on L plates and will have to renew the CBT every two years. Theory is only necessary if going to do the full licence.

Out of interest I wonder if she could ride a Niken on that licence?

If going down the three-wheeler route a Yamaha Tricity would be my recommendation.

No.

It comes down to the width between the two front wheels. The Nikken doesn't qualify - it requires a full bike licence.

There are some three wheeled scooters that qualify however.

For OP's benefit can you cite an official source of this information?

Anyone know where there might be a list of three wheel scooters you can ride on that licence (similar to the list on the .gov website for the list of bikes you can use on the test for each category)?

Can't find it with a quick Google (probably falls somewhere under constructive and use legislation) but the limit is 460mm. The Nikken is only 410mm wide.

Best options are probably.something like a Piaggio MP3 or a Tricity 300.
