Morning all,

I currently have a CRF250L which I've been using for trail and adventure riding but I'm looking for another bike to improve my fine control and enduro style skills (practical wheelies, log hopping, forest trails and rough single track etc.). I've found the limits of the L really and I'd like something lighter that will make developing these skills easier.

Ideally I'd like the bike to be easy to road register as I dont have a van and I'm only a short 10 mile ride from a pretty large off road centre. I also don't want something with silly short maintenance intervals either (i.e. competition style, I don't mind regular oil changes just not every few hours).

Suggestions as to what I should be looking at? A trials bike would probably fit the bill for skills development but I'd rather something more enduro style for flexibility where I ride.

Cheers

Beta Alp200?

EDIT:
Sherco x-ride?

Or what about one of the older twinshocks like a Yamaha TTR/Serrow or an Ossa? They always show well in long distance trials.

You've kinda hit the problem button first time. The crf isn't good enough for everything it promises. The older drz400e was a great compromise. There's a few bikes out there by smaller manufacturers using other companies engines. But, you really need to work out what you want first. Running a bike like a klx450 or a crf450x (The road legal ones) or an enduro ktm won't need the oil changes of a comp bike, but will still be more than a crf. I've been here a few times and always end up selling the bike before I've ridden it hard enough to change oil 3 times.
I keep looking for ccm404s, they're a great bike.

Thanks.

I've been looking at the Beta range actually although I was more focussed on the X trainer. The more trials orientated bikes would definitely be better for skill development I reckon but I'm more drawn to the lighter end of the enduro segment for versatility on the different terrain available to me locally.

The CRF250L serves a purpose for me (with some mods) in that I use it for longer trips with a mix of road and off road riding and I actually bought it for a multi month trip I'm hoping to do (currently postponed due to having had to postpone my wedding thanks to Corona) so I'll be keeping it. I knew what I was getting when I bought it and was aware what the limitations would be (it's actually a bit more capable than was expecting). It's just now that I've been doing a lot more off road riding I've found I'm enjoying it more and more so it's a more focussed toy I'm after that will make learning useful techniques easier.

The only reason I'm after longer maintenance intervals is because I'm lazy and fed up wrenching on bikes 😅 I'm not expecting anything close to what the L offers in terms.of oil change intervals. Ideally I'd like a few days of riding between the changes.

I literally got rid of a CRF250L for a Beta X-trainer. Didn't regret it, except that it's a PITA to road ride for very long. I'm crap. and even I can log hop it, and wheelie it, and sometimes do so without falling on my arse. Very Happy

New piston at 100hrs, was hardly worn, my friends go for 200+ between changes.

I change oil every 2nd ride, which is quick and easy as it's a 2 stroke.

Thanks folks. The Xtrainer seems to be exactly what I'm after (it's only 20 mins of road riding to get me to an excellent off road centre. With all sorts of terrain. Annoyingly the wife had just been made unexpectedly redundant so the idea is having to go on the back burner for now.
