Can someone explain to a computer imbecile how a VPN works and if there is any reason for a user that isn't a terrorist, hacker or pirate downloader to have one?

Surely governments and big companies like Google have the ability and knowhow to find out who is using one and where are they from or is it too much effort to check unless they think you are going to blowup the Eiffel Tower or call a Pikey a Pikey cunt on Facebook.

Cheers.

Not really a reason to have one if you aren't dodging round stuff.

A VPN creates a (relatively) secure tunnel between your machine and the point in the internet you are connecting to. It makes it much harder for anyone to see what you are doing online.

There are a lot of legit uses for one however, outside of 'dodgy' endeavors.

On a straight forward level, I use a VPN everyday to allow me to work from home. I can connect to me office network as though I were physically in the building, yet preventing ne'er-do-wells stealing our intellectual property.

You can also use a VPN for location spoofing, making it appear to the internet at large that your are browsing from another country. This allows Chinese citizens to escape the dogmatic censorship of their overlords.
It also allows me to sign up to Netflix using alternative currencies and take advantage of favourable exchange rates to get a better deal.

EDIT: I'll add that VPN use is so commonplace that neither Google nor HMG would pay a blind bit of notice to the fact you are using one. You won't appear on an intelligence agencies wanted list just for using one if that is what you are worried about.

Unless you're using one to tunnel into a work network, or avoiding ISP snooping or want to change your apparent location or...

All legitimate purposes.

I use them all the time Thumbs Up

I have a permanent work VPN, but thats not what OP asked for.

ISP can snoop all they want, I am the ISP. Laughing

Location wise, yes, I get that, its how I get my games cheap but for Polarbear and his XXX searching, probably not Laughing

Quite the opposite (sort of)... Google force captcha on our customers (schools mainly) when little johnny brings his phone in and fires up some dodgy VPN app, the whole school (who go out of the same public IP) get captcha requests from Google. Whilst its not them giving a shit, its them being aware.

Cheers all - not worth it for me then but another question about it for curiosity, does your IP number change with location. By that I mean if you are using a mobile broadband, does your number change every time you access the network if you are in a different location?

Also I presume if I take my laptop to my friends house and log on through his wireless network I would get a different IP address would I not?

You will have a different IP address when connecting via VPN.
Your phone number wouldn't change as that's linked to the SIM.

Opera web browser has it built in, Firefox are looking at implementing one.
Both are free, but as you have no true idea who can see your traffic (with or without VPN) then don't ever use the internet unless you're happy with that fact of life.

I use them to access sites like livetv.sx 😁
This site is banned by laws relating to copyright infringement not what you're all thinking.

I watch footie through it with sopcast or acestream.

They’re critical if you’re on a network that’s not yours, especially public hotspots etc. The whole “if you’re not doing anything illegal you don’t need one” is bullshit. The ensure no one else can see your traffic except the website you’re communicating with, and prevent things like DNS redirecting or HTTP injection.

If you connect to public hotspots you deserve to be touched inappropriately Laughing

There are 2 types of VPN in layman, corporate and personal (not technical terms).

1. A VPN to tunnel into a local network from home or on the move.
2. A VPN to hide internet traffic

Most people are commenting about type 1, but you mean type 2 (e.g express vpn, tunnelbear, pia etc). The idea of them is:

1. To hide the contents of the traffic as it passes between you and your desination address except for the final hop between the exit server and you. This is useful if the traffic is otherwise not encryted. Also useful if using free wifi hotspots.
2. Hide your IP address from the destination website as your IP will appear to be that of the VPN provider

I would strongly suggest you use one given that you like to have your own opinions and not follow the establishment line. What websites you visit are logged by your ISP, its held for 6 months and can be searched by all manner of jobsworth agencies. There will probably be a scandal in the future involving leftist activists getting this data hoovered up on their opponents and passed to them.

ISPs can detect a VPN but it proves nothing and suggests nothing because they are so common. The civil liberties idea of a VPN is to protect your data from blanket surveillence but if you are being targeted by GCHQ personally then you will need to put a lot more effort in e.g TOR, Tails.

If you're using https then you're not as vulnerable to a rogue node as those who're just using http are.

Your ISP and or the government / police have no interest in what you're downloading or what porn you're watching unless you're into some pretty fucked up things! Laughing

The most successful way to prevent Google knowing things about you that you don't want them to know is to not use Google for things that you don't want Google to know about you. Thumbs Up

Whether or not the country the ISP is based in is a country that cooperates with western law enforcement could be something to consider.

The exit node knows the URL your visiting, no need to decrypt and inspect packet contents.

I'm sure that different government regimes have so many competing nodes that an end to end trace is nigh on impossible, but don't forget the track record of them injecting malware to reveal IPs.

If they want you they'll get you in the end.

If by saying 'conservative speech ' you mean people spouting bollocks about 5g and trumps continual lies about covid and the like, you are quite correct

A strawman on an internet forum and not in a field. How strange.

All the anti 5G protests around me use spray paint and stickers. Hard to imagine grannies from the local Tory association spraying graffiti.

You’re thinking of Visible Penis/Nads. Different forum for that one.
