Currently have 750 virago 23 years old and probably lost a few of it's orginal 47ft-lb and 55hp. 2nd bike 13 year old (seems like yesterday) 2007 CBF100 95ish BHP (still seems to have most of them) and a bucketload of torque bought last October to satisfy the 1 litre 4 cyl needs.

Ideally I only actually need one bike, the bastard offspring of the Virago riding position (mid controls, drag bars v.low saddle) and the CBF motor. Everytime I look I end up writing off bikes as lacking in torque and power and end up looking at massive engined twins like the Triumph thunderbird storm or Suzuki m1800 - and then am put off by the sheer weight of the bloody things. Trying to avoid Harley's if possible. what are peoples experience with 900-1200 cc sporty cruisers?

Lol, I know where you're coming from, I'm sure it's a great fun ride but absolutely no chance of carrying more than a toothbrush. Needs to be comfortable for pillion and/or capable of carrying luggage for camping touring (and I don't fit in little coffin tents anymore!) - Perhaps I do need more than 1 bike? lol.

Triumph speedmaster?

Buddy of mine raves about his. And he can fairly shift on it too. Nor bad looking either.

Speedmaster? Mate of mine has one (1200), it goes pretty well. A trial sit on it didn't impress though, very much sat on, rather than in (cruisers riders will understand maybe) Possibly due to low handlebars on his or their too far back. I'm not particularly impressed by the ground clearance, seems way to easy to grind a footrest (not that it slows him down much, but he's not a sporty type of rider either).

I keep coming back I think to the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and Yamaha xv/xvs 950 - but they still seem slightly lacking in torque and horses for the engine size, any owners out there with first hand info?

BMW Roadster R1100R - R1150R - R1200R. Not really a cruiser (riding position more upright, not recliner chair style) but performance reminiscent of HD. Loads of torque, loves to cruise 75mph+. A little on the porky side, but nothing compared to the 1800CC behemoths.
Got to admit it, though, the styling is either love it or hate it.

Shame they don't make the Honda Magna any more.

The BMWs don't have the cruiser laid back look, not ugly though, but just roadsters really. Nearly whent after a magna last year, just the age that put me off a bit - I might be regretting that decision now...
. (nowt wrong with age except something post 2000 stands a chance of having reasonable suspension and tyre sizes that are easily catered for.)

No idea what the riding credentials will be like and it's an expensive, heavy and big bike, but I love the look of the new R18 and with 1800cc it isn't going to be a slouch either. I'd like to think that BMW will make it handle at least reasonably.

What a good looking bike! Might look more authentic with some Bonneville style pea shooter pipes on it, though. Look at the size of those headers; doubt you could find pea shooters that big. Probably too heavy to muscle through the curves, but down the boulevard you be stylin!

Ah, the R1800 - another Behemoth though isn't it?
I do wish it was the 80's still - an xj100 maxim would be the easy choice.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/iDpIs2lycZw/maxresdefault.jpg

lighten the rear end a bit, gunslinger style saddle, Swap bars for drags on risers or similar, pretty much there for me. ...
Apart from the 1001 other little pieces that aren't seen but need doing to make a bike of this age work reliably and keep up with the modern competition (yes suspension, ignition, full carb refurbs - or just fork out for fuel injection). Trouble is once all that is done, may as well have spent the money on something a lot younger.

Jeez - that's horrific. A child only it's mother could love. Looks like a GS has shagged a Suzuki bandit..

The TR1 was probably a contender too.

We need to stop labelling bikes. I've said this before. Oh, it's this or that just keeps bellends going to Spain and comparing everything to the latest hyper sports bike.
Too many gobshites in a very small pond.
(Get a diavel).

My local Ducati KTM dealer screwed up when I took my 1299 in for a service and realised I would be waiting far longer than they said so they gave me free range on their demo bikes. I obviously deliberately ignored the Panigale V4S because I knew I'd end up wanting one so took out a hooligam KTM (fantastic fun) and a Diavel. The latter was a very good bike, quick (very quick!!) and decent handling, comfortable. I see no reason you couldn't get some panniers and use it for whatever you wanted - two up too if necessary shouldn't be a chore either I'd guess (and only a guess as I didn't try it with a pillion)!

Surely the answer is Yamaha V-Max?

I've even seen them with hard luggage fitted if you're really desperate for more storage space.

Edit:

New model with luggage

Old model with luggage

That bike looks like it's meant to be ridden aggressively across the Polish border.

VMAX or Diavel.

Cruisers are still wank though.

My mate put 80 odd K on one. I've never actually seen one in the metal. Didn't sell well in the UK apparently.

I'll second a V-Max. Decent enough poke, upright enough riding position, much less gayness than a cruiser.

Was there ever a V-Max version where it hadn't been hit with the ugly stick though? With enough funds and choice between the Duke and the Yam I think the Duke wins every time. Still not the picture in my head when I think cruiser though - But, it is more about what it feels like in the saddle than looks. (yeah right...)
