I've seen lots of advice that if you want to replicate the takeaway experience then use MSG. That's the thing though, many are not trying to recreate an authentic Asian dish, but to recreate an authentic Anglicised takeaway version of an Asian dish.

It reminds me of an Indian restaurant I went to a while back. Someone in the group said it was the most authentic Indian food he'd ever had. I asked when and where he'd been in India and he replied he'd never been there, but you could tell it was authentic. To be fair I have been to India a few times and this restaurant was very good, but the fact it was served as a default poppadums/chutney/meat dish/pilau rice/naan bread affair meant it was a very English version of good Indian food. I never once, in India, had a meal in the way we have them here.
