He had an Indian passport, having been born there. He would only get in trouble if he yellowed up.

I know very little about sailing, having only done some dinghy stuff at school camp, and tillered a yacht for half an hour last year.

However I have just watched a dinghy sailing across the bitches , near Strumble head in wales on Thursday. For a while the boat was moving more in the vertical plane than it was forward in a most disconcerting and uncomfortable looking fashion. This is 200 metres off the Welsh coast, never mind the largest ocean in the world.

I think you are proposing a trip, which, whilst it sounds lovely, is so far outside your skill set , that you are not really aware of the dangers, nor really the skills you would need to complete such a trip.

Sorry to be blunt.

It was quite some exhilarating/wet/shit the pants moments all rolled into one climbing up the walls of 40' waves in a 35' ketch with nearly everything flying (ie spinnaker out, main on first reef) when we hit Tarifa's winds/waves.

Sorry, I was never one for pouting duck lips in front of a camera, (although I do believe there are some photos out there of me butt naked at the foot of the North face of the Grandes Jorasses, but that's another story).

If you need help with the visuals just think of the film 'The Perfect Storm' with me as a young George Clooney and a boat that had a couple of masts/sails on it. Laughing
Edit: To be honest the whole episode more resembled something out of Captain Pugwash though.

I really like the Bolitho novels by Alexander Kent too as well as the WW2 naval novels written by the same author under his real name of Douglas Reeman. Although not really a sailing game, I like VStep's Ship Simulator 2008, which I play quite often.

That would be handy as at the moment I'm 640 nautical miles into a race across the Atlantic on a racing catermaran. Look up VR Regata on Google play its a lot safer than the real thing.

Hah! That's nothing. On Saturday I shall be off exploring the uncharted regions of the Grand Union canal between Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard to break my post Covid pub duck at the Globe. I shall never be more than 10 feet from the shore. The canal is never more than 6 foot deep (except in locks) and if it's a sunny day, the canal side fluff is usually out in skimpy force.
Also after a skinfull there is nothing better than falling out of the pub straight into your boat.

Sod this ocean lark. You don't get this halfway across the Atlantic. Wub

Perhaps the anticipated timescale but there is still time to get some big seas in.

Just to give some people an idea of what the seas can be like and what mentalboy went through in his little sailboat....

This was taken in the 70's by a friend of mine in an 18000 ton tanker going across Biscay in winter. It's a shitty faded old photo but it's the best one where I actually know some of the people who were there. They still talk about it when we get together and reminisce.

^^^I have done some silly shit in my time - falling 60' on a big lead was a bit of a lifechanger for my back, I've had a boulder the size of a mini move and squeeze the shit out of me in a mine, I've been trashed kayaking in monster storm waves around Drake's Island in Plymouth Sound, had some 'interesting' capsizes on grade 4 rivers, fallen through rotten boat decks, eaten tarmac on far too many occasions - and yet that Biscay trip was the only time I have ever thought that I was going to die.
