Took the coast road from Poole, through Weymouth and on to West Bay for fish and chips this afternoon. Very hot and sunny, loads of bikes but unfortunately lots of holidayers driving as though they have left their brains at home.

Yesterday, 150 miles out but with a difference. 110 or so miles of that were learning from an Advanced Motorcycle Instructor (and all round nice guy) Keith Dunn, of Zen School of Motorcycling.

Keith asked me what I wanted to work on, understood where my issues were then designed a course around learning that would help me achieve those goals.

There was a good mix of theory and practice; including on the move mentoring and parked up feedback, plus demonstration rides / commentary.

Upped my confidence massively, learned some new tricks to add to the kit bag, and just generally had a really, really good time. Keith is a gent and I'd highly recommend him and his teaching.

Couldn't range far today as I had to do my speed awareness course early in the afternoon. Soon as it finished though I decided to celebrate speeding in all it's glory and found this field of Sunflowers just outside Tilshead.

180 mile round trip to Hunstanton on the R1. Frustrating due to the amount of traffic but better on the way back. It was nice to see the sea (it must have been half a mile out) but on this second visit to Hunstanton I'm still not that impressed. Still, it's all about the journey.

Wells-next-the-Sea is quite a nice spot further along the coast, nice to stop for fish and chips and can get down to a big car park close to the sea.

136 miles up the east coastline to the Stour, taking in the Stour, the Colne and the Blackwater across the day. Chased the coast / rivers for the breeze as stiflingly hot.

First up, stopped to see Bourne Mill just south of Colchester. Had never seen it before, despite growing up in Colchester and having worked in the town for a few years recently as well. Odd that I had no prior knowledge of it. On quite a busy road which is a shame but absolutely stunning nonetheless.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50206515353_6edfa4eea3_b.jpg

Then it was time to get something to eat, and I'd heard of a place called the Waterfront Cafe in Mistley, right on the Stour river - local biker group recommendation so I thought hey, why the hell not. Got there and pitched up at the only catering wagon I could find on the whole stretch. As I got off the bike, nice owner came out and greeted me with 'lovely bike mate' etc. Looked at menu and thought hmm, I seemed to recall the food was fancier, but whatever. Ordered a burger. It was bang average. Thought LOL, recommendations are always naff from bikers........ Got home and realised the actual Waterfront Cafe hadn't pitched up for the weekend as it was too hot for them to keep their food cool Doh!. Oh well, I'll have to go up there another time to try it.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50207318382_8b80c49a1a_b.jpg

Then I realised I was ~15 miles away from a mate of mine in Brightlingsea and I haven't seen him since March before lockdown - so it seemed about right that I'd go have a catch up with him. Brightlingsea harbour is quite bustling and busy:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50206515018_2e4c1cdb2f_b.jpg

We stopped for a quick pint of shandy in one of the trendy bars at the bottom of his development, where a young lass was singing solo over her guitar and the weather was great and there were swanky ladies in floaty dresses aplenty.

Showed me his boat:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50209490481_6ffa11ac2a_b.jpg

He wants to take that over to Holland next year - sod that Laughing

Then headed home through the nice lanes past Mersea Island and back south to Maldon. Few choice overtakes were done. Monstering the torque of the boxer out of the bends.

Good times Thumbs Up

I've walked most of that when I did the Essex way and some of the coast, about a week.

I miss rides out to your previous shot, Finchingfield - some good roads around there, and a nice place to watch the bikes coming and going, some fancy cars too. Used to head for there from High Beach.

I've done a few good chunks of the Essex Way - it's not that well cared for any more down this end; I think it was 2 years ago I did the East Tilbury to Stanford section and it was overgrown to the point of needing a machete.

Finchingfield is a good destination to aim at because once you're there and you've had your fill, there's 6-7 ways you can head out from in a loop back round to roughly the same place, before coming home again.

The road through to Steeple Bumpstead from there is probably the most challenging, and there's one section that never fails to catch me out.

It's a lovely village too. I sometimes used to ride out there then dig out a sketch book whilst lazing around in the sun.

There're a few roads around there that can catch you out if you're getting the pace on Laughing

I know Mistley, Manningtree.
There are two burger vans/ coffee-tea vans along that stretch.

One serves trendy coffees and cakes and the other is a dirty greasy burger van with questionable hygiene.

The coffee van is obviously more expensive, but at least you know you won’t go home with a runny bottom Sick Shocked Evil or Very Mad .

I live far enough away to make there a destination for a short afternoon ride.
I use that route to get into Colchester without using the A12.

Plan for today was Tidworth to Henley via a bit of Oxfordshire and then Goring for Lunch before heading back via Pangbourne and Highclere. Wanted to try my new phone with it's 64mp Camera.

Diverted when I thought a saw a sign for "stoner", turned out it was Stonor but close enough. Leaving there the bike made the weidest backfire noise I'd ever heard.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50210826408_499bdeebe7_h.jpg

Made it to Henley (and probably got a parking ticket for this photo).
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50210824583_32bc1cc5ba_h.jpg

Couldn't get the bastard thing to start in Henley, Relays were all making horrible noises. Couldn't explore much as the factory toolkit instead of having 3 spanners with 2 sizes on each, had 3 fucking identical spanners and the wrong size Allen Key to get the battery out, Friday afternoon in the toolkit packing department I guess Laughing Went in search of a drink and when I came back got it to kick over. Clocks were doing weird shit but motor was running so I made a beeline for Reading to get the M4 (fastest way home). Bike died in Caversham, wouldn't restart this time and I noticed there was loads of gel like shite had come out the battery. Time for the Truck of Shame

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50211618297_483f1b63e4_h.jpg

Got home and explored. That bang I heard in Stonor I'm pretty sure was the sealed top part of the battery case blowing itself clean off, battery is now unsealed Laughing , gel shite has got everywhere. The exploded battery was still sitting over 13V. Hooked up the GSXR battery, bike started fine, reg/rec is fucked though and I'll have to strip quite alot down to clean all the battery guts up.

Nah, you won't get a ticket - that's a traditional bike photo spot. Smile

Sounds like the heat cooked your battery. Or cooked something else, which cooked your battery.

My parents live just outside Pangbourne. I know that route down via Caversham very well, although it takes you through the town centre via the IDR which is not a way I'd like to go with a ropey bike if I'm honest.... You may have been better to go down the Tidmarsh road and then over the Theale bypass to the M4 that way... still... the bike stopped either way. Shame.

Laughing yeah bloody fuel pump needing to prime! You can actually convert these to carbs but I don't see the point.

Heat killed the reg/rec is my thought. Everything else is in spec. Looking at it for a bike made in a bloody hot country it doesn't seem well located. Behind a metal and plastic battery box with a panels to either side. There is no airflow at all.

Biggest job is actually going to be cleaning off all trace of Battery guts. The stuff has got everywhere, least it didn't take my balls out though, every cloud etc.

20 odd years ago I briefly lived near Pangbourne and then later briefly in Caversham. Agreed had I made it that far the route through Reading on a surging playing up bike would have been horrendous. It was unplanned I had a lovely multi-stop journey on my phone for the day but when I go the thing to start it was a case of "Hey Google take me home fastest route".

Happened to Frank's CGT, too. Seems the R/R is 'a bit Indian'. His battery ended up spluging all over the cover too and nigh on ruined the paint so he was more than a bit peeved.

Forgot to say some people bang on about the R/R needing the case to be grounded rather than just the earthing through the loom connector. I'm really not convinced by that argument. The standard brackets are so naff that they snap and drop the R/R off the frame. I reckon a good 50% of modern Enfields are running around with the bracket snapped and the R/R bouncing around with no ill effects. Personally, mine snapped and I've just cable tied the R/R up out of the way - securely, but in no way is it grounded other than through loom. It's done ~1500 miles like that. If there were an issue with grounding, it would have fried everything by now.

I may have got lucky here I've cleaned off the obvious stuff but there is still loads in hard to reach places that requires some stripping, the Gel doesn't seem to have attacked the powdercoat on the frame though, wonder if it's less corrosive than traditional Acid.

I think the R/R issue on the CGT is 2 fold. 1 cheap shit part, 2 it's in a dead spot for airflow, it's doomed to cook itself.

Researching R/R's now. Hitchcocks (as expected) have 2 over priced options, a quick google of reveals neither is of any note and also neither is wired for the bike so I won't be paying their prices for a model specific part that I then have to hack my own connectors on to.

It seems the best R/R's are MOSFET designs and all the big names buy them from a single OEM, Shindengen. Not cheap though £100+. There are Chinese copies for £25, lack of reviews on them though and the saving would be wiped out when it dies. Issue 2 is the Chinese copies are on appearance perfect copies, so like DID chains paying your money probably still involves a gamble on authenticity.

I may just get a cheap used one off a random Jap bike and change the plugs to suit, odds are then it's a legit Shindengen though probably not MOSFET

Thats what I have done twice so far, spliced a second hand MOSFET from a modern bike in to replace a old shunt on my sv and divvy after connectors burned on both (due to rain). I dont know enfields though.

https://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Connectors/R-R_Connectors/r-r_connectors.html

Typically just tried to source these connectors for a lot cheaper.
