Recommend a bicycle for taking luggage, lots and lots of it

Wifey wants to replace her bike, one of my old,old ones, which is just worn out.

Main criteria is it must be able to take a stupidly large amount of luggage edit by luggage, I mean shopping, or stuff that needs lugging about not touring and still be rideable.

Ex-postie bike and or a new Pashley pronto/courier spring to mind.

Any other ideas?

You may have already bought the thing by now, but I've used a Surly Long Haul Trucker to tour all over the UK and parts of Europe (including the Pyrenees and the Alps). It's a fantastic bike and happily carried 3 weeks worth of kit including camping stuff (and bottles of wine on occasion!) over the biggest passes, both the ups and the downs were handled well (it's got very low gears and is incredibly stable at speed even loaded up).

It's not a cheap bike but it's worth the money in my opinion - mine is 10 years old but looks new still.

I've had 50kg on the back of a Charge Scourer before (generic sporty hybrid with 2x9 and disc brakes).
Pretty much any bike should do it okay with appropriate panniering.
When carrying bigger things (such as a load of wet washing and a 30lt water heater), weight distribution can be an issue, leading to a light front end and the bike sitting up when you get off it.)
So if wanting to take big and heavy things you might consider a cargo bike with a bit longer wheel base so weight is more centrally distributed.

On the trailer side - a bit excessive, but I made myself a festival trailer as you may have seen elsewhere that's had 200kg+ on it at some points. Just angle iron, some bolts for pivots and a couple of mountain bike wheels.

I saw a step through Royal Mail one for sale at a vehicle show for £100, it was all legit. Couple years back, I made the mistake of phoning wife and asking her if she wanted it, and then getting the in-laws input. Should've just bought it.

So, I got given a very old tatty trailer, but lots of life left in it yet, beefed it up with some strapping, the shelf out of an old oven, and a bit of ply wood. This is the setup i use on my allotment to move things to and fro
