What do people think of buying a bike with keyless ignition? Not as in some fancy wireless technology, but as in it has a simple on off switch instead?

The reason I ask is that my speedo is kaput, and I am struggling to find a replacement. It would be cheaper and easier to get a generic Amazon special speedo and throw that on. However, the ignition barel seels to be part of the odomoter assembly (I haven't taken it apart to look in detail yet so the assembly may in fact just sit on top) so I would need to change that as well and it would be easier to wire in a switch than another ignition barrel.

My main reason not to do this is resale value. I don't want it to be another badly done ebay "cAfE rAcEr CoNvErSiOn". So what are peoples opinions? Would you buy a keyless bike, or would it be a "steer well clear of this one" thing?

WHAT is the bike? There may be things you can do. See "The Workshop".

I direct your attention to your previous threads where people have asked what bike you've got. Wink

Is there any reason you need to remove the odometer assembly?

I'd be concerned about resale value and how quickly it could be stolen.

Good luck ever trying to sell it if that’s what you do. Most sane people wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole, and just wait to see what your new insurance quote is when you tell them you’ve removed the primary security device.

Yeah this is my main concern.

I'm going to stick my bike in my signature... just as soon as I figure out how.

Just that the odometer is broken. And its cheaper to buy a £40 amazon special speedo than £100 for a second hand Hyosung one from someone parting out a bike (which would also add 10k miles to what my bike has actually done).

Bike theft in Spain seems really rare. Partly because when you change the V5 to a new owner you both (seller and buyer) need to go to the DVLA office and do it in person with your photo ID. And also... just it doesn't seem to happen much. I guess there are so many motos around that you're unlikely to be a victim. And frankly a keyless ignition would confust most theives more than anything. And I always put a lock on the front and rear wheels (most motos here are parked with no locks)

What, so until then you're layin' low? You could always just post its name. I suspect it's a 125cc "Cruiser".

Why an earth would one do that? Loosing money for something that never gets printed on the "re-sent" insurance certificate isn't my idea of fun. I've had phone monkies that couldn't even find quote numbers their system had generated. Take out policy > don't crash in the middle > renew. Sod contacting the money robbing cnuts.

Hope that helps.

Stick a fake ignition barrel on, superglue the key in it, have the ignition combination switches hidden, 16 wired in series.

Sit back laughing as you watch some scrote trying to get the key working.

Then cry as he comes back with a van, and the bike gets shipped to Albania.

Bit fucking drastic methinks. The ignition, odometer, and tachometer are all separate assemblies under that cover. Chances are it's just a speedo cable loose or snapped anyway.

My mate has a harley with keyless ignition, you just need to be near it with the key on your person. When we were camping at the weekend, every time he got too close to it, someone started it.

Repeat until funny...

Just find someone on ebay breaking the same bike and buy a replacement dash. I wouldn't go moving the key and potentially screwing up your insurance and it would devalue the bike.

I've got keyless on my car and I hate it. Every so often I'm looking for my key and I realise I've left it in the the car Laughing
