One for the internet guru's please.

My laptop in my mancave has gone stupidly slow. So slow that half the time pages seem to take ages to open and speed testing only shows 2.5 megabits and sometimes won't even perform the test. Doing a speed test on my phone from right next to my laptop shows 23.5 Mb and the BT test from exchange to my router shows 50 odd. Wifies older and slower computer beats mine hands down .

Have I done something to my laptop? Inadvertently downloaded something. I have McAffee, Malaware and HitmanPro on it. Any suggestions please?

Laptop is an HP with AMD A8-7410, Radeon R5 graphics, 2.2Ghz, 8GB RAM and a Scan Disk 500MB SSD.

My old Toshiba one which was originally Windows 8 has been struggling, I just did the reset thing which has helped a lot but more than I expected has needed re-installing.
If you are basically doing browsing and email with it, worth considering though.

It seemed to start going wrong when I put Malwarebytes on it as I can have full version for free from NatWest.
That's running fine on main PC but possibly just too much on this so just using Defender like before now.

Mind there have been several windows updates lately you don't really know if they worked out OK on it, or what the were exactly. I know one took over three hours before it restarted (very slowly)

When did the slowdown start? is it Windows 10?

If you've got a network cable, plug it directly into your router, reboot and perform the test again. If you're back to normal speeds, it's your wifi, if it's still slow, it's something on the laptop.

If it is Windows updates causing the slowdown, leave it plugged in to the router with the wifi on the laptop disabled to give it the best chance to complete the downloads.

I've always found anti virus software just slows things down too much to be worth the effort most of the time, especially with already slower machines. If your not constantly downloading things from dodgy places then just get the free malwarebytes and run a scan every so often.

I did find that running Tron Script on very slow computers improved them massively. It does things like a disc defrag and removes a lot of default Windows bloatware that slows things down.

My bad, I didnt read the specs closely. You can run it with the "-sd" command to skip defrag anyway, although apparently the script is able to detect a SSD for you.

you can call up task manager from the menu and look at processes n shit
to see what clogging things up.
You can right click on most processes to stop them

Well, this is weird. It's works ok when plugged into the router. Just crap on wireless and I've even got one of those BT booster disks quite close to it.

Wifies laptop is fine on wireless. Phone is fine. Firesticks and Alexa work fine. Remote printer works fine.

Can the wireless receiver start to fail or is GCHQ rummaging through my files on Polabear sex habits without my knowledge. Thinking

Could just be shitty wifi card. I haven't used wifi in years because nothing replaces a hard wired connection, unsure what to suggest with a laptop though Sad

Just like anything else a WiFi can get old and be a bit cranky. You might be lucky and it's under a panel somewhere, i.e. a replaceable part. Or you could buy a USB WiFi stick.

I have plugged my laptop into the BT booster disk and problem cured, Looks like something to do with the wifi as it's running fine now.

Thanks all. Thumbs Up

Most problems of slow internet speed is mostly due to non consistent and stable internet. Did you try to change your IP adress it might solve your internet issue.

Nobody else get into the router and fiddle with it? Could it have been set to throttle the speed on your laptop? Many have quality of service settings.
