The front deraileur and shifters are expecting the sprockets in a certain place. If the set have a narrower spacing, it wont line up.

They will line up, the spacing setup on the chainset is the same for chainsets with seven, eight or nine speed chains. I hope that kind of makes sense?

Ages and ages if I dont ride it? Ive done under 500 miles on this bike, it was used but dont think it had done much when I got it.

If it's not being ridden then assuming the chain is lubed it's not going to make any difference to how long the drivetrain components last.

To be honest, the chainrings on your crankset don't look very worn to me and so I don't think they need replacing. With any luck stinkwheel or sickpup will look at this thread and give their opinion to confirm or correct what I'm saying. Smile

Ordered anyway, thanks for the help.

I do think the rollers were recent. I rarely had problems until recently it has got much worse, and suprisingly much worse with the new chain and rear sprockets. I was happy to ride it, now I consider it dangerous.

I have properly tensioned the chain link. I could not find one on the old chain, they all look identically riveted. Factory fitted chain?

What else would cause the chain to slip or jump off?

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/3-to-8-speed-bike-chain-id_8298688.html

Identical to the "KNG Narrow" stamped thing that was on there before.

All fitted. I also shortened the chain by 4 links as I think it was a bit long. This will stop it going big to big cog, jams if you try, but that is something Id never use.

Much better, did 30km last night no problems.

If you set the length of the chain correctly then your quality of bike will improve. Wink

You don't plan to use big-big, but that one day you forget and try for it... hope you're not too far from home.

A proper length chain should be able to select every gear option, even those that are not recommended. All my double- and triple-ring bikes will select big-big and small-small.

One more adjustment is needed. Since the upgrades, going direct 2-8 to 3-8, pushes the chain over the big cog into the plastic guard, what would be 4-8, I loose all drive and speed and have to go back to 2. This does not happen if I were in 2-6, it changes perfectly.

Tried adjusting the H screw and cable tension, no help. Ideas?

You've set the H screws on both derailleurs?

Sounds like you need to screw the H adjuster on the FD in a touch.

Have not touched the rear H screw, it seems in line with the cog, problem is at the front. This started directly after swapping the front crankset. I'll measure them in a bit see if they have a different total width.
