I don't think it's utter shite, just that it probably isn't going to make a chain last that much longer. Wear on components through friction isn't the only thing that has an effect on chain life. Chains stretch too. The power being applied through them brings other forces to bear, correct?
But then, that doesn't mean it won't be maintenance free through its life.

No, utter shite was over the top but Robby is right. The sort of people who have expensive BMW's and send them to the dealers for everything will be quite happy never touching their chain and having it replaced every year or whatever by a dealer.

So with that in view it's not a maintenab=nce free chain that will last the bike life, it's a chain that will last longer than a standard chain that isn't maintained.

If you are happy with that, fine.

I meant metaphorically, as a general point, not specifically aimed at you Mr. Strip.

I remember when BMW introduced the R1200 hexhead series and touted the maintenance free final drive, only to have to retroactively develop a maintenance procedure for it that involves removing the whole thing to drain the oil and refilling it with a syringe through the ABS sensor hole.

or when BMW touted maintenance free timing chain system on the R1100 only for the guides to routinely dissolve.

And then the same thing to happen on the S1000 series a decade later

if they couldn't get a stick and two cogs right I have no faith in them making a chain last any longer than DID.

There will be a guarantee with this new chain. They guarantee that if it breaks you can keep both halves for free.

I stole that line from Tony Galea. Older people might know who that is. Is he still going??

I've ordered a S1000XR with the sport pack that includes one of these chains. I'll let you know how I get on with not oiling it (against my better judgment), might go all scientific and take measurements and stuff Thinking .
