Assuming that everyone on benefits is dolescum is a rather outdated view.

I know person on universal credit. Single parent, works part time, gets UC. Would like to work full time, but would end up worse off - UC is shit like that.

Finding somewhere to rent has been very difficult, limited to about 5% of the market until now. This person ends up paying more, or having to live somewhere worse.

Like so many things, this one move will not fix all of society's ills and is therefore worthless in the view of certain members of BCF. I like it, because its a step in the right direction towards removing some of the structural barriers in society. Even if the person renting is stereotypical dolescum, at least they have a chance of living in a better area so their kids can have better influences.

Maybe, but while it's obviously not a majority that cause problems, it's widespread enough to be an issue to landlords.

At the risk of sounding MPD ish, a bit like blacks and gangs. It's a minority, but a sizeable enough minority to be an issue. Those reality programmes that show tenant/landlord wars don't help either.

The thing is, if I had a house to rent, why would i even consider DSS when I don't have to and therefore eliminate one potential worry.

When I first got divorced and she played silly buggers with the house, because I was looking after the children I almost got a house on DSS, but they took so long to sort out and house owners were being little shits renting out that I ended up having to change jobs and go private. I had just gone from a house that was far better than those on offer and had to deal with scrote landlords.
Not all DSS people are knobs, some are short term in need due to situations beyond their control. My present Landlord thinks I'm the best thing since sliced bread and most of my neighbours thing I'm great after thinking the worst when they saw the bikes arrive.

I worked for ten years in supporting the homeless and those in danger of homelessnes. I know the issues around housing management back to front. There's no point contributing to the thread though because nobody really gives a s#it. People just love to have a whinge about the poor.

Every single one of these housing issues can be laid at the door of the criminal tory scum, beginning with that vile cunt thatcher and currently proceeding with the imbecilic eton filth bojo the clown johnson.

Oh, but 'socialism'. Yeah, like these societal issues are any different to a mechanical system that requires nothing more than an ethical mechanic who isn't as dumb as a plank.

Allow criminals to run a country, this is what you get.

I don't understand this "housing shortage." Where are people living? There's no shortage, it's just that a surprising number of people are able to own multiple properties which they won't sell, only rent. The remaining housing stock which is on sale is thus more in demand and so pricier than it ought to be. Also, private renting is so expensive (you're paying off someone else's second mortgage) it's hard to escape into ownership.

Except that a year ago, the legislation was changed (by the Tories, no less) to outlaw deposits exceeding 5 weeks' rent, regardless of the reason/justification

That's been stopped since the Deposit Protection legislation came in at least 10 years ago. If a tenant disputes a deduction, then it's on the onus of the landlord to prove it's legit; otherwise the tenant always wins any arbitration by default.

End of what?

Making things illegal doesn't miraculously stop them happening.

Landlords try all sorts of dodgy stuff.
