Hey chaps,

I have searched a there's a couple 2yo threads but not very useful, so thought it best to get a current info on what you use for riding wired/wireless earphones/buds.

I've tried a few I've found around the house and borrowed, they either hurt after a few minutes or fall off constantly. Currently using some wired phone ones which I put upside down and loop the cable around the ear. Okeyish, but still hurt after a 1-2 hours and one slides out, then the cable...fecking hazard....

I think budget would be £100, but might be convinced otherwise. Buds sound attractive, but I'd be afraid they'd fall off or otherwise losing them.
Wireless sounds (hah) like the best option, probably wouldn't be riding for more straight than the battery lasts, but with a mic. I'd also use these for running. I thought about wired, but I think the hazard is a bit much. I'm not considering helmet comm systems as I'd like these to double as earplugs and got no buddies to connect to. I've heard some have nice voice commands, those are probs gonna be a couple hundred though, (google can hardly understand the band names anyway, also, METAL, no need for super bass masking bad quality, there's already enough fuzz most of the time).

I had been eyeing the wireless Shure SE215, but they were >£100 and had some complaints about constant disconnection. Actually I just checked and they're £80 on amazon now, weird.
The Bose SoundSport Wireless and Sennheiser CX Sport seem to be the staples of sport earphones, but unless there's a way to test them under the helmet...I'm not inclined to commit to a purchase.
Anyway, open for suggestions

Thanks in advance. Mr. Green

Funny you say Shure 215, that's what I've always used (but with the cable). I've had three pairs over the course of 8 years. In a moment of idiocy I managed to cut the cable with my car door. £10 cable off ebay sorted the problem. They're great earphones. Thumbs Up .

Earbuds with the silicone tips will give best noise isolation and stay in place in your helmet. I’ve always been a fan of Etymotic buds.

it won't help you but on the cheap Audiosense T180 is quite decent Shure knock-off (they are exactly the same shape) and their cable is way softer than what Shure ships. Also, bluetooth cables for their connectors exists and work well.

edit: SpinFit CP800 tips are a blessing. most other tips didn't keep in my ear canals in the helmet (I've got a stupid flappy ears).

Went with the Shure.

6 hours riding after, never dislodged, no physical discomfort nor wind headache. Battery is just over 8 hours, charged from over half to full during quick lunch break. I recommend.

Only criticism is the controls, i feel they should be closer to the earbud.
The Bluetooth receiver has a clip, if you put it on the back the controls are mostly out of reach. If you put it in the front (where it's kind of in the way because of shirt/jacket collar, necklaces, whatever) it's easily reachable from under the helmet and usable with leather gloves, which is good, but probably bad if you want a phone call.

Still, think it's as good as it gets Very Happy

£100? For something that you're likely to lose?

I paid £35 for some plugfones and I thought that was a tad on the salty side.

Well Marjay, I did lose them, out of my own stupidity. They have a carry pouch with a carabiner which I kept attached to a belt loop, until suddenly they weren't there. Not even sure if it was on the bike or off as I only noticed later, and it did last many 1-2 hour rides. Thinking

It's worth the money in the sense that I also used them off the bike, about everyday. And they block out wind noise really well to. Still cheaper than bike comms.

Now not sure if I should buy another pair or try something different. Anyone tried those active noise cancellation buds? Even more pricey though. How does it compare to just any phones with good insulation foam tips?

I went another way and got a Cardo Freecom 1+; this has flat speakers that sit in the ear recesses of my helmet; I wear earplugs and can hear the satnav and my music perfectly well at all speeds so far tested. Stable connection to iPhone Xs and TomTom GPS, lasts for hours etc.

I have Bose QuietComfort QC20s a bit pricey but they are excellent. They have active noise cancelling, it has microphones that i Thumbs Up t used to inverse the sound waves to cancel out undesired noise. It cuts out wind and engine noise greatly. They are excellent I have bought a second pair when they were on offer they are so good. My hearing was noticeably better after using them for a few weeks. Thumbs Up

Exactly my question, good insulation, vs active noise cancellation.

Also the design of Shures makes them stay in place very well as if they were plugs. and comfortable as they do not protrude.
I've had trouble with normal earphones in both senarios, but I guess the fancy ones like Quiet Comfort or the wireless Senheiser Momentum might lock in better and not be uncomfortable under the lid?

another Shure user, went for SE425, straightforward 2channel cable with kevlar to strengthen them, (replaceable, with same or a cable with controls and mic) no phone mic or controls, I use them with Cardo Packtalk.

Shure SE series were first designed for musicians as monitors on stage, they cut background noise by as much as phone earplugs, (30-35dB) and you can have custom ear mould made for them should you wish.

My advice if going for expensive in ear monitors, is get a pair with replaceable cable, coz if/when they do fail it will likely be the cable, the sure has the advantage of being able to be used with Shures bluetooth 'cable' which includes a Mac and mic etc to use with phones, although that is another £100.

It all depends on your earsize they do come with s/m/l ear buds, but I still know people that couldn't get on with the fit. As for keeping them in they never fall out when my lid is on but I had to ensure they were firmly in place and pull my lid apart to make sure they stay in when putting the lid on. Is now part of my routine and I don't even notice but I am aware I do take more care putting the lid on than before.

The active noise cancelling tech is excellent. I did try some cheaper ones (Audio Technika?) at about £50 but they weren't a patch on the Bose ones.

Pretty sure Bose have some kind of no quibble return period too.

Been using the se215s with BT since the latest BT dongle thingy came out (2-3 yrs?)
They work well for me. I get nearly 9 hrs from each charge.
The clip is still strong.
Used everyday.
