Hello Guys/Gals.

My brother is going to give me his Yamaha YBR 2009 Custom motorbike.

Its failed its MOT due to the steering head bearing and a few others, I'm capable of the others but I've never done a Steering head bearing.

So is this a hard job or just a pain in the arse job?, I will only be working from a Haynes manual if I attempt the job,

Cheers Smile

The Haynes manual will tell you how to do it but I'd enquire how it failed first cos its usually
"excessively stiff, notchy, or with excessive wear or play"
If they're not badly worn and just a bit slack,
you can sometimes just give them fresh grease and adjust them up a bit
If they're badly worn, time to RTFM and renew

Some Yamahas steering bearing cups have no lip to tap a drift against so you may need an expanding type removal tool.

Other than that removing the lower bearing off the steering stem is the hardest part. I have found that a Dremel with a small cutting disc makes easy work of it. You don't even have to cut all the way through, you get so far and it breaks open on its own and you can lift it off.

Getting the bottom bearing race out can be a pain in the arse. Follow the instructions in the Haynes manual.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The MOT cert says, " Excessively stiff or Notchy".

So I presume this is new bearings?.

Cheers

In my experience you are better off replacing the bearings. Replacing them can be easy or it can be a bit of a nightmare depending on whether you can get a good hit on the lower race. There's some factory manuals. They're in Spanish but have pictures and you can translate the part you need. https://www.clubybr.com/descargas.htm

I have the Haynes YBR manual here and it looks pretty informative
on changing the steering bearings

Thanks my brother has the Haynes Manual, I haven't had chance to read through it but by what WD Frote is saying, I should be ok.
