EU budget blocked by Hungary and Poland over rule of law issue.

Hungary and Poland pissed off at being told they are undemocratic right wing white supremacists or something similar. Laughing So they have blocked the bill because there is a clause limiting it to countries that conform the the EU's idea of what is good and bad.

On Monday, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said the rule of law issue was "just a pretext". "It is really an institutional, political enslavement, a radical limitation of sovereignty," he said.

Ouch, now where have I heard that before with reference to the EU Thinking

It's about democratic accounability which is an EU law.

There a very queer sound to that juxtaposition of words.

However, let it lie, or the laV may be summoned.

To be in the EU you have to follow eu rules. These include ones about democracy. Both Hungary and Poland are going a bit totalitarian.

Have a look at the recent Hungarian law surrounding abortion.

The same rules are the reason why Turkey cant gain membership but you aren't bitching about a Muslim country not following a democratic process that the eu likes.

Certainly that is one of their core values but in this case they didn't have to make countries acceptance contingent on it though. They used it to force the budget through in the first place because it meant they could use a majority, rather than total agreement according to the article. However that is not the case for the final implementation.

The ambassadors had voted through the clause that made access to EU funds conditional on adherence to the rule of law, because it only required a qualified majority, the German EU presidency said.

Even back when they were discussing it Poland threatened to veto.

In the end, it's the EU's programme of rapid expansion that is coming back to bite them in the arse. They were quite happy to have the ex communist countries join even though they have a completely different view of a lot of things from western European countries.

Christ, they were even considering Turkey but they couldn't push that past everyone.

Anyway, that's a different topic. Here, when they have to have unanimity they aren't going to get it without either giving concessions to Hungary and Poland or bringing in some way to bypass their vote.

It will be interesting to see which route they go down.

Any semblance of 'democracy' in the EU just died, now that the Commision's unelected chauffeur-driven, establishment lifers are scrapping the unanimity required to block budget payments to what they alone will determine are “rogue” governments.
Not just payments from the seven-year budget, but also the covid relief fund. What duplicitous hypocrisy, ‘one Europe for all’.

I'm sure you make some relevant points but it's hard to read your posts as it takes too long to filter the Diarrhea out.
